Thompson drops 54, Looney tips in game-winner as Warriors outlast Hawks in 2OT

A vintage, 54-point display courtesy of Golden State veteran Klay Thompson has helped the Warriors pull off a hard-fought 143-141 win in double-overtime against the Atlanta Hawks in San Francisco this afternoon.

It was a Kevon Looney putback as the clock hit zero, however, that proved the difference as the Warriors extended their winning streak to five without Stephen Curry.

Thompson finished with 54 points, eight rebounds and four assists on 21-of-39 from the field and 10-of-21 from three.

It was the seventh game of Thompson’s career in which he finished with double-digit three-point makes – the second-most of all-time behind Curry’s 22 – and the fourth 50-point game of his career.

Looney finished with 14 points, a career-high 20 boards – 10 of which coming on the offensive end – and four assists.

Jordan Poole had 28 points, six rebounds and five assists whilst Anthony Lamb added 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists off the bench.

Draymond Green put up just five points but had 13 rebounds, 11 assists and three blocks to go along with a massive three-point hit in the final minute of the second overtime whilst Donte DiVincenzo also struggled shooting but had eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and a game-tying three with 0.7 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Warriors enjoyed a hot start to build a 21-point, first-quarter lead before Atlanta clawed their way back into it with a 42-25 third quarter.

Both teams scored 37 points across the fourth quarter and the first overtime to send things to 2OT.

The Warriors outrebounded the Hawks 76-60, outscored them second-chance points 20-6, and outshot them from three 19-11.

Atlanta won the battle in the paint and had more success at the free-throw line.

The Hawks were led by Trae Young’s 30 points, seven rebounds and 14 assists whilst Dejounte Murray had 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

John Collins added 25 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks whilst Onyeka Okongwu had a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double.

Bogdan Bogdanović had 21 points on 3-of-6 from three off the bench.

The Warriors improve to 20-18 on the year whilst the Hawks fall to 17-20.

The Warriors will play host to the Pistons on Thursday whilst the Hawks are in Sacramento on the same day.
