Texans fire head coach David Culley
January 15, 2022
The Houston Texans will have a new head coach for the 2022 National Football League regular season, as it was announced on Thursday they decided to fire head coach David Culley of Sparta, Tennessee after just one season according to Sarah Barshop of ESPN. It was a not a good 2021 season for Houston as they had a record of four wins and 13 losses, the third worst record in the NFL. Only the Detroit Lions (3-13-1), and the Jacksoville Jaguars (3-14) were worse.
Culley was initially hired by the Texans as their coach on January 29, 2021. He had spent 27 seasons as an assistant coach before finally getting a head coaching chance.
One major issue with the Texans this past year was the controversy regarding the DeShaun Watson saga, who did not play the entire season. In March, Watson faced 22 civil lawsuits for inappropriate sexual behaviour. Throughout the year there were significant rumours that Houston would trade Watson to the Miami Dolphins, but at the end of the day, nothing happened and Watson remains property of the Texans.
There were some signs of positivity for the Texans in 2021. Despite being named in trade rumours as well, veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks of Stockton, California had a career-high 90 catches for 1037 yards and six touchdowns. Meanwhile, rookie quarterback Davis Mills of Atlanta, Georgia, Houston’s third round draft pick out of Stanford, showed significant progression as the season went along. In the last four games, which included Texans wins over the Jaguars and Los Angeles Chargers, he had eight touchdowns compared to two interceptions.
