Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario has withdrawn from the 2022 Australian Open in Melbourne citing a need to work on her mental health and physical health according to the Canadian Press. Over the last year, Bianca had to deal with coronavirus, as she was part of a long list of tennis stars who tested positive for the disease in 2021.

It should be noted that Bianca’s grandmother also had a serious bout of coronavirus. As a result, she spent several weeks in an intensive care unit. There have been 1,815,215 cases of coronavirus in Canada and 29,827 deaths. A total of 1, 756, 185 Canadians have recovered, and there are 29, 203 active cases.

In 2019, Andreescu was ranked as high as fourth in the world. In one of the greatest single seasons ever by a Canadian tennis player, she won the United States Open, Indian Wells, and the Rogers Cup, in her home city of Toronto.

In 2020, Andreescu did not play at all as she recovered from a knee injury she suffered at the 2019 WTA Finals in Shenzhen, China. Then in 2021, she played 30 professional singles matches on the WTA Tour, and won 17 of them.

Andreescu’s best result in 2021 was the Miami Open, where she reached the final, and lost to Ashleigh Barty of Australia. Due to the fact Andreescu was unable to defend her three WTA titles, she saw her world ranking drop from fourth in the world to 46th.

Andreescu is no longer the top Canadian on the WTA Tour. She has been passed by Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec, who reached the final of the 2021 United States Open before losing to Emma Raducanu of Great Britain, 6-4, 6-3.
