It was a fascinating weekend for Canadian golf. For the second time on the PGA Tour in 2024, a Canadian was victorious. After Nick Taylor of Winnipeg, Manitoba won the 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open on Super Bowl Sunday, Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ontario won the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Dallas, Texas this past weekend.
One major reason why Pendrith found his way into the winner’s circle was because of his back-to-back eagles in the third round on Saturday. Pendrith posted a score of three on a par five on the fifth hole, and a score of two on a par four on the fourth hole. In both situations, Pendrith made remarkable shots that were initially very unlikely to go in based on the high level of difficulty and long distance. Pendrith made a 26 foot and 11 inch chip, and then a 41 yard approach shot.
Six golfers were in contention. Ben Kohles of Dallas, Texas finished in second place with a score of -22. Alex Noren of Stockholm, Sweden was in third place at -21. Then four golfers were three strokes back at -20. This quartet included England’s Matt Wallace, South Korea’s Byeong-hun An, England’s Aaron Rai, and South Korea’s Seong-hyeon Kim.
Anyway you look at it, this is a great time for Canadian golf. In September, Canadian golf will be even more special as Montreal is hosting the Presidents Cup. There are currently six golfers ranked in the top 100. Taylor is 26th, Adam Hadwin of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan is 49th, Corey Conners of Listowel, Ontario is 52nd, Pendrith is 58th, Mackenzie Hughes of Hamilton, Ontario is 69th, and Adam Svensson of Surrey, British Columbia is 83rd.
