Socceroos in the States: Following Australia’s campaign at the World Cup

We’re finally here — the 2026 World Cup is starting in North America, and our mighty Socceroos are ready to battle on the global stage all over again.

Australia enters the 2026 tournament in Group D, alongside co-hosts the United States, an emerging Türkiye side, and a motivated Paraguay team. With the tournament expanded to 48 teams, the qualification path is slightly more forgiving: the top two teams from each group, plus the best-placed third-place finishers, advance to the Round of 32.

While the group is balanced and competitive, Australia stands a healthy chance of progressing by securing at least one win or three draws.

Match Schedule (AEST)

  • Australia v Türkiye: Sunday, 14 June, 2 PM (BC Place, Vancouver)
  • United States v Australia: Saturday, 20 June, 5 AM (Seattle Stadium, Seattle)
  • Paraguay v Australia: Friday, 26 June, 12 PM (Santa Clara)

Group D: Scouting the Opponents

  • Türkiye: Regarded by many as the most serious test in the group, they combine tactical discipline with technical excellence. Under coach Vincenzo Montella, they operate with an fluid, attacking 4-2-3-1 formation that allows significant freedom for their creative players to exploit space.
  • United States: The tournament co-hosts are the group favourites. Led by Mauricio Pochettino, they are an athletic, high-pressing side that thrives on transition speed. While they possess genuine goalscoring threats like Folarin Balogun, they have shown recent vulnerabilities in defensive consistency when forced into errors or faced with quick counter-attacks.
  • Paraguay: A side defined by South American grit and resilience. Never a team to be underestimated, they excel at grinding out results and bringing intensity to high-stakes matches.

How to Follow the Action

For those watching from Australia, broadcasting rights and digital coverage remain the primary methods to catch every moment of the Socceroos’ matches.

  • Official Updates: Football Australia’s official channels, including the Socceroos website and social media platforms, provide direct information regarding team news, match reports, and exclusive behind-the-scenes content.
  • Broadcast and Streaming: All three of Australia’s group matches will be broadcast live on SBS and SBS On Demand.

Catch up on the Road to the Cup

Australia’s journey to the 2026 World Cup came in two phases. Initial qualifying saw the Socceroos cruise through a group against Palestine, Lebanon, and Bangladesh, winning all six matches with a perfect record.

Subsequent AFC qualifying proved more challenging; a difficult start led to a coaching change, with Tony Popovic taking the reins.

Under Popovic, Australia’s squad then stabilised, securing a pivotal 1-0 victory against a high-quality Japan side before sealing their qualification with a gutsy 2-1 away win against Saudi Arabia.
