Should NBA revamp their All-Star game?

The 2025 National Basketball Association All-Star Game took place on Sunday, with Team Shaq beating Team Barkley 41-25 in the final in San Francisco. The fact that Warriors defensive specialist Draymond Green is calling the state of the NBA “boring“, and giving the All Star Game itself a rating of “zero” did not help with the television ratings, which was down 13%.
After the significant global popularity of the National Hockey League’s Four Nations Faceoff, one needs to ask the NBA if it is time for an All-Star Game revamp? The answer is yes. The bottom line is currently the players in the game may try, but it is an exhibition event and do not give any attempt at all in playing defense. When Stephen Curry is the leader in rebounds, you know the game does not have any compelling interest whatsoever.
What we have seen from the hockey world is something the NBA needs to start to emulate immediately. What the NBA has recently instituted has not been effective. The midseason tournament has less meaning than your prototypical tiddlywinks contest, and the play-in tournament should not be in existence. Twenty teams playing after an 82 game regular season is simply too much!
Hockey has got it right. The NHL instituted a compelling and dramatic midseason international tournament involving hockey’s four strongest nations (Canada, the United States, Finland and Sweden), and people are excited watching the event. No one gets up in the morning and says, ‘I can’t wait to watch the NBA All-Star Game!’
The NBA marketing department needs to discuss massive changes that will benefit the game as the status quo cannot continue. One possibility that was brought up yesterday by ESPN was a United States versus the World competition. Why not best of five over the span of a week? Worth a try because the current state of the league is boring!
