The first round of the 2025 United States Open is now complete and there is one top 10 ten player who has been knocked out. That is the sixth seed and 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys of Rock Island, Illinois.
The player who beat Keys was Mexico’s Renata Zarazua, who is ranked 82nd in the world. Zarazua delivered a winning score of 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 on Monday. You could make the argument that the main reason Zarazua came through with a victory is because of the high number of mistakes made by Keys. The key statistic were unforced errors. Keys had 89, while Zarazua only had 34. The bottom line is when one player makes 55 more mistakes than his or her opponent, you are seldom going to win a match.
The other key statistic was the number of service mistakes made by Keys, who had a staggering 14 double faults. Zarazua only had five.
This was the second time that Zarazua has ever faced Keys. The first time came in the first round of the 2024 French Open, where Keys won 6-3, 6-2.
Zarazua has now won five grand slam singles matches in her career. She beat France’s Elsa Jacquemot 6-1, 6-2 at the 2020 French Open, France’s Caroline Garcia 6-1, 6-4 at the 2024 United States Open, American Taylor Townsend 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 at the 2025 Australian Open, and Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer 6-0, 6-3 at 2025 Wimbledon.
Next up for Zarazua is France’s Diane Parry. Zarazua will be heading into this match with confidence. That is because Zarazua has beaten Parry twice in the past. The last meeting came in the final of Uruguay in 2023, which Zarazua won 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
