Autumn Glow will bypass the $20 million Everest after connections decided the champion mare is better suited targeting the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes.
Owner John Messara, trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald met to determine her spring program following a record-breaking victory in the Winx Stakes.
The temptation to challenge Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising over 1200 metres was considerable, but connections ultimately chose the $5 million King Charles at Randwick on October 17.
Autumn Glow will prepare for the mile feature through the Group 2 7 Stakes at the same course on September 19.
Ka Ying Rising Challenge Was “Very Tempting”
Messara admitted the prospect of testing Autumn Glow against the world’s leading sprinter created genuine interest in The Everest.
“We looked closely at The Everest and there was a part of me that wanted to try and beat Ka Ying Rising,” Messara told Racenet.
“But the reality is Ka Ying Rising is as good as any sprinter I’ve ever seen and 1200m is his best distance.
“We all feel Autumn Glow is at her best between 1400m and 1600m, so it was agreed we should go for the King Charles.”
The decision is not simply about avoiding one exceptional rival.
Autumn Glow has never raced over 1200 metres. Asking her to drop sharply in distance against the world’s most powerful specialist sprinters would introduce an unnecessary variable when she already possesses an ideal Group 1 target over a mile.
Ka Ying Rising is also expected to start as an extremely short favourite after winning the 2025 Everest and continuing to dominate in Hong Kong.
Autumn Glow may be capable of competing with him, but capability alone does not make The Everest the correct race.
Official Spring Program Confirmed
Arrowfield Stud confirmed Autumn Glow’s next two races before revealing she could finish her preparation at Flemington.
“After a meeting between the ownership group and trainer and jockey, the following Spring 2026 program has been confirmed for Autumn Glow,” its statement said.
“Saturday, September 19 – G2 7 Stakes 1600m at Randwick.
“Saturday, October 17 – G1 King Charles III Stakes 1609m at Randwick.
“All going well, her Spring campaign will conclude in a race yet to be decided, at Flemington during Melbourne Cup Week.”
The King Charles is officially listed over 1609 metres, although it is commonly described as a 1600-metre race.
It will be held on the same program as The Everest, removing any possibility that Autumn Glow could contest both features.
King Charles Plays Directly to Her Strengths
Autumn Glow’s record strongly supports the decision.
She has won 12 of her 13 career starts, including four Group 1 races, and accumulated more than $9 million in prize money.
Her only defeat came when she finished third in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2000 metres in April.
Autumn Glow travelled like the winner before her stamina weakened inside the final 200 metres, reinforcing McDonald’s assessment that she is a champion miler rather than a genuine weight-for-age staying mare.
She returned to her preferred distance range in the Winx Stakes and immediately regained her dominance.
The King Charles allows Waller to prepare her entirely around two races over 1600 metres rather than attempting to sharpen her for an unfamiliar 1200-metre sprint.
It also gives Autumn Glow four weeks between the 7 Stakes and her principal target.
That is a considerably more natural progression than dropping from the Winx Stakes at 1400 metres to The Everest against the world’s fastest horses.
Winx Stakes Victory Confirmed Her Best Distance
Autumn Glow resumed with an outstanding performance in the Group 1 Winx Stakes over 1400 metres at Randwick.
McDonald positioned her fourth before allowing the mare to accelerate away from a field containing nine other Group 1 winners.
She defeated Sheza Alibi by approximately 1.4 lengths in 1 minute 21.03 seconds—the fastest time recorded in the history of the race.
Autumn Glow was already being eased down near the finish.
“She was strong, very strong,” Messara said after the victory.
“Her time was enormous, it was a proper test and she came through with flying colours.
“She’s a great mare with a great trainer and a great jockey. What else can you ask for?”
The performance was Autumn Glow’s 12th victory from 13 starts and fourth at Group 1 level.
It also confirmed that her Queen Elizabeth defeat had not diminished her ability.
The 2000-metre distance found her out. Returning to 1400 metres restored the explosive acceleration that made her one of Australian racing’s biggest stars.
Horse of the Year Honour Strengthens Her Status
Autumn Glow was crowned Australian Racehorse of the Year at the Racing Night of Champions following her outstanding 2025–26 campaign.
The award was presented less than 24 hours before her spring program was announced.
Her campaign included elite weight-for-age victories and the first 11 wins of her career before the Queen Elizabeth Stakes produced her only defeat.
The Horse of the Year title does not mean her connections need to accept every available challenge.
Choosing the race that best suits Autumn Glow is more likely to extend her career and provide Australian racing with several seasons of elite performances.
The Everest would carry greater prize money and attract enormous attention, but the King Charles gives the mare a substantially better chance of producing her best.
Sheza Alibi Remains the Major Threat
Autumn Glow is the early $1.60 favourite for the King Charles, ahead of Sheza Alibi at approximately $2.80.
Two-time defending champion Ceolwulf and Pride Of Jenni share the next line of betting at around $8.
Sheza Alibi lost no admirers when finishing second in the Winx Stakes.
The younger mare missed the start before recovering to settle behind Autumn Glow and finishing strongly without ever seriously threatening the winner.
Waller welcomed the emerging rivalry after Autumn Glow won their first weight-for-age clash.
“People come to the races because they want to see these great horses racing each other,” he said.
“We don’t always want the clashes, but it is important for the sport.
“We have come out of round one pretty well, but I’m pretty sure there will be round two or round three.”
The King Charles provides an obvious setting for another meeting, although Sheza Alibi’s final program must still be confirmed.
Autumn Glow will face genuine opposition even without Ka Ying Rising.
Everest Market Changes Immediately
Autumn Glow had been the second favourite for The Everest at approximately $5 before connections confirmed she would not run.
Her withdrawal removes the runner bookmakers considered the most likely threat to Ka Ying Rising.
The Hong Kong champion was already the dominant favourite at around $1.50 and could shorten further as the field becomes clearer.
Tempted was next in betting at approximately $9 when Autumn Glow’s decision was announced.
Despite The Everest being less than two months away, no runner had been officially confirmed at the time of the announcement.
Ka Ying Rising is expected to represent the Hong Kong Jockey Club slot, but that allocation still requires formal confirmation.
Autumn Glow’s decision may also increase interest in other available horses as slot-holders search for a credible opponent to the defending champion.
Flemington Options Remain Open
Connections have not decided which race Autumn Glow will contest during Melbourne Cup week.
Messara identified the Champions Sprint over 1200 metres and Champions Mile over 1600 metres as possible options on November 7.
The Champions Mile would maintain the distance range chosen for the rest of her preparation.
The Champions Sprint presents a more adventurous possibility.
If Autumn Glow is freshened after the King Charles, the race could give her valuable experience down the Flemington straight before a potential Royal Ascot campaign in June 2027.
That would allow connections to test her sprinting credentials without making an unfamiliar 1200-metre race against Ka Ying Rising the central target of her Australian spring.
No Flemington decision has been made, and her performance and recovery from the King Charles will determine whether she continues her campaign.
Connections Made the Correct Decision
The Everest would have generated enormous excitement.
Watching Australia’s newly crowned Horse of the Year attempt to defeat Ka Ying Rising could have become the defining contest of the spring.
But the race would also require Autumn Glow to perform outside her established distance range against a champion competing under ideal conditions.
The King Charles offers $5 million, Group 1 status, her preferred distance and the possibility of another major clash with Sheza Alibi.
It is not the easier option simply because Ka Ying Rising will be elsewhere.
Ceolwulf has won the race twice, Pride Of Jenni remains dangerous and Sheza Alibi possesses the ability to improve from their first meeting.
The difference is that Autumn Glow can confront those rivals under conditions designed to reveal her best.
Messara wanted to take on the world’s leading sprinter.
Choosing the race that suits his own champion was the smarter decision.
