Zac Lloyd believes Guest House has the talent to complete an unprecedented Golden Slipper-Golden Rose double at Rosehill on Saturday.
The star colt will attempt to become the first horse to win both races during the same calendar year when he contests the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose over 1400 metres.
Guest House has already demonstrated that his two-year-old brilliance survived the transition into his three-year-old season.
His record-breaking victory in the San Domenico Stakes confirmed that.
“I knew I had a very good horse underneath me,” Lloyd said after guiding the colt through a narrow opening before accelerating clear at Rosehill.
The jockey’s confidence will face a more searching examination when Guest House tackles 12 rivals and races beyond 1200 metres for the first time.
Guest House Can Complete an Unprecedented Double
Forensics is the only horse to have won both the Golden Slipper and Golden Rose.
However, her victories did not occur during the same calendar year.
Forensics won the 2007 Golden Slipper before the equine influenza outbreak forced the Sydney spring carnival to be abandoned. The Golden Rose was subsequently moved to March 2008, when the filly returned to win the race as a three-year-old.
No Golden Slipper winner has captured the Golden Rose since it became a Group 1 race in 2009.
Fireburn produced the best result among the four Slipper winners to attempt the feat during that period, finishing fifth behind Jacquinot in 2022.
Guest House therefore has the opportunity to accomplish something no previous horse has managed under the race’s modern conditions.
The difficulty of the double is not surprising.
Golden Slipper winners are trained to reach their peak as early two-year-olds over 1200 metres. Six months later, they must compete over 1400 metres against more physically developed horses whose juvenile campaigns may have been considerably lighter.
Many Slipper winners also struggle to reproduce their best form as three-year-olds.
Guest House has already avoided that fate.
Record-Breaking Return Changed the Conversation
Guest House resumed in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes over 1100 metres on August 29 and immediately demonstrated that he had returned as a stronger horse.
Lloyd settled the colt behind Blue Door before becoming briefly trapped along the inside approaching the home straight.
The available opening was tight, but Guest House forced his way through before defeating Blue Door by approximately one-and-a-quarter lengths.
He completed the distance in 1 minute 2.41 seconds, breaking Westicaro’s Rosehill track record that had stood since 2007.
The victory also made Guest House the first Golden Slipper winner to claim the San Domenico Stakes since Tierce in 1991.
More significantly, he became the first Golden Slipper-winning colt or gelding to win another race as an older horse since Pierro in 2012.
Those statistics illustrate why the supposed “Slipper curse” has become part of the discussion surrounding every returning winner.
Guest House did not merely win his first race after the Slipper.
He produced a performance suggesting he may have improved.
“He’s a big, robust colt,” Lloyd said after the San Domenico.
“He’s only going to get better with every run he has. For him to do that at 1100 metres, it’s very exciting.”
The 1400 Metres Remains the Major Question
Guest House has never raced beyond 1200 metres.
That creates the most obvious reason to question his short price in the Golden Rose.
The son of Home Affairs possesses enormous natural speed and has already established himself as an elite sprinter, but the Golden Rose requires more than raw acceleration.
Lloyd must help him conserve energy through the opening stages before asking him to produce his finishing speed at the end of a strongly run 1400 metres.
Barrier five should assist.
It gives Lloyd the opportunity to settle behind the speed without forcing Guest House to work excessively from an outside draw.
The colt carried 58.5kg when winning the San Domenico and drops to the Golden Rose weight of 56.5kg.
However, he will also face a deeper field and several opponents already proven at the distance.
Co-trainer Mick Price does not believe the additional 200 metres will expose Guest House.
“If someone said to me, ‘Can you win the Caulfield Guineas with that horse?’ and I trained him for it, I think he’d be ideal for it,” Price told SEN.
“I don’t think 1400 metres will be a problem for him. If he has a relaxed way in running on Saturday, that’ll give him the best chance.”
The confidence is understandable, but the distance remains an assumption until Guest House proves it under Group 1 pressure.
Trainers Deliberately Avoided the Traditional Lead-Up
Price and Michael Kent Jnr elected to bypass the Group 2 Run To The Rose, leaving Guest House four weeks between his San Domenico victory and the Golden Rose.
The decision denied him another opportunity to gain race fitness over 1200 metres.
It also allowed the trainers to protect the colt from an unnecessary run after his taxing first-up performance.
Price revealed Guest House initially appeared slightly uncomfortable after the San Domenico, prompting the stable to restructure his preparation.
The colt has since completed two strong 1000-metre gallops, while his recovery data has reportedly satisfied the stable.
Kent Jnr believes the four-week break is not a disadvantage.
The stable employed a similar preparation with Jacquinot, who won the 2022 Golden Rose after contesting the McNeil Stakes four weeks earlier.
“The horse was clearly quite forward in condition and the fact that he could run a track record first-up showed that,” Kent Jnr told Racing NSW.
“He’s going to have to be very good and on his A game, but I think we’ve got him cherry ripe.”
Warwoven Brings the Strongest Lead-Up Form
Guest House will not receive an uncontested path into racing history.
Warwoven won the Run To The Rose and has drawn barrier one for Rachel King, giving the Bjorn Baker-trained colt an opportunity to secure an economical position behind the speed.
St Gotthard has James McDonald aboard but must overcome barrier nine.
Tron Bolt brings established 1400-metre form after winning the Group 1 JJ Atkins as a two-year-old, although he finished seventh behind Warwoven when resuming in the Run To The Rose.
Chris Waller will launch a five-horse challenge through St Gotthard, Tron Bolt, Central Europe, Campione D’Italia and Stormy Marco.
That numerical strength creates tactical uncertainty.
Guest House may possess the best acceleration in the field, but the race could become complicated if the tempo is slow and Lloyd finds himself surrounded by Waller runners approaching the turn.
The favourite’s San Domenico victory demonstrated that he can negotiate traffic.
Relying upon another narrow opening in a Group 1 race would still be dangerous.
Lloyd’s challenge is to place Guest House close enough to the leaders without allowing him to over-race during his first attempt at 1400 metres.
Golden Rose Could Decide Guest House’s Everest Path
Saturday’s race carries consequences beyond the historical double.
Guest House is already prominent in betting for The Everest despite not yet holding a confirmed position in the race.
Coolmore owns a share in the valuable colt and controls an Everest slot, making him an obvious candidate if he wins the Golden Rose convincingly.
Dropping from 1400 metres to 1200 metres three weeks later could suit Guest House, particularly if the Golden Rose strengthens his ability to settle before producing one decisive sprint.
Victory would also dramatically enhance his future value as a stallion.
Guest House is by former Coolmore sprinter Home Affairs and already possesses a Golden Slipper victory on his record.
Adding the Golden Rose would demonstrate that he retained his speed and developed physically between his juvenile and three-year-old campaigns.
An Everest or Coolmore Stud Stakes victory would elevate his profile even further.
Price has consequently identified those three races as the defining targets of Guest House’s spring.
The Golden Rose comes first.
Lloyd Has the Horse to Rewrite the Record Books
Guest House deserves to start favourite after his extraordinary San Domenico performance.
He has drawn favourably, drops in weight and appears to have returned better than the colt who won the Golden Slipper in March.
That does not make the result inevitable.
The 1400 metres is untested, the month between races introduces some uncertainty and Warwoven arrives with the benefit of winning the traditional lead-up.
History also demonstrates how difficult it is for a Golden Slipper winner to remain dominant against the emerging three-year-olds.
Guest House has already answered one of the major questions surrounding him.
He did not regress after the Slipper.
Saturday will reveal whether his brilliance can stretch far enough to achieve a double no horse has previously completed in the same year.
Lloyd believes he has the right horse underneath him.
Guest House now has the opportunity to prove that confidence belongs in the record books.
