James McDonald believes a fiercely run edition of The Shorts can help Joliestar overcome a difficult draw as the defending champion begins another campaign aimed directly at The Everest.

The Chris Waller-trained mare will resume in the $1 million Group 2 sprint over 1100 metres at Randwick after being scratched from the Sheraco Stakes.
Joliestar has drawn barrier nine in the 10-horse field and will confront confirmed Everest runners Private Harry and Briasa.
Her task is remarkably similar to the one she completed 12 months ago.
Joliestar resumed in the 2025 Shorts, settled behind the speed and defeated Briasa by one-and-a-quarter lengths before progressing to The Everest.
Waller has deliberately returned to the same program following the mare’s outstanding Royal Ascot campaign.
“This looks a harder race to be fair, but she’s a quality mare,” McDonald said, according to Racing NSW.
“High pressure suits her and it looks like a mini-Everest rehearsal for sure.”
Joliestar Returns Through a Proven Pathway
Waller resisted the temptation to resume Joliestar in the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes over 1200 metres at Rosehill.
The mare was scratched and redirected to The Shorts, allowing the stable to reproduce the preparation that carried her into last year’s Everest.
The decision means Joliestar will race over 1100 metres before receiving four weeks between runs.
Waller has repeatedly highlighted her ability to perform fresh and believes the spacing gives him enough time to maintain her fitness without requiring another competitive start before October 17.
The Sporting Base previously examined Waller’s plan to send Joliestar first-up into The Shorts before progressing directly to The Everest.
Nothing has changed.
Joliestar completed two barrier trials in preparation for her return, with McDonald pleased by the sharpness and confidence she displayed.
The mare finished third in her latest Randwick trial on September 2 without being placed under maximum pressure.
Saturday represents a considerably greater test.
Private Harry and Briasa already possess Everest places, while the remaining runners are attempting to strengthen their claims for the unfilled slots.
The race will consequently provide more than an opportunity to collect another Group 2 victory.
It will reveal whether Joliestar has returned from her overseas campaign capable of seriously challenging Ka Ying Rising.
Waller Has Already Backed His Mare
Joliestar does not need to win The Shorts to earn an Everest invitation.
Waller has already committed his stable’s slot to the mare for the second consecutive year.
That decision represents an enormous demonstration of confidence.
The mare has earned her position through three Group 1 victories, a successful international campaign and two previous appearances in The Everest.
Her latest attempt produced a fifth-place finish behind Ka Ying Rising in 2025.
McDonald believed Joliestar travelled like the winner approaching the home turn before briefly losing her action through Randwick’s dip.
She recovered and maintained her position to the line but could not match the acceleration of the Hong Kong champion, Tempted or Jimmysstar.
Waller could have waited for another spring performance before confirming his representative.
Instead, he removed any uncertainty and gave Joliestar a guaranteed place before her return.
“A great advertisement of how well she’s going is Chris has put her in his stable slot,” McDonald said.
The guarantee changes the purpose of The Shorts.
Joliestar is not racing to qualify.
She is racing to demonstrate that Waller’s early commitment was correct and establish herself as one of the most credible threats to the defending champion.
Wide Draw Makes Tempo Crucial
Barrier nine presents McDonald with a tactical problem.
Joliestar is not naturally suited to beginning quickly and forcing her way towards the lead.
Her greatest asset is the acceleration she can produce when allowed to settle and travel within herself.
McDonald will therefore be reluctant to ride aggressively merely to prevent the mare from covering additional ground.
He is more likely to allow Joliestar to drift behind the leaders and search for cover.
That approach will leave her dependent upon a genuine tempo and clear running room during the final 400 metres.
The presence of several fast horses should help.
Private Harry is capable of occupying a prominent position, while Briasa possesses enough tactical speed to remain close to the leaders.
If they apply pressure to each other, Joliestar should receive the conditions required to build momentum and unleash her finish.
A slowly run race would create a far more difficult assignment.
The leaders could accelerate before McDonald has moved Joliestar into the contest, leaving her required to produce an exceptional closing sectional over the short Randwick straight.
McDonald’s confidence is based partly upon his expectation that the quality and composition of the field will produce sufficient speed.
The mare still needs the race to unfold in her favour.
Briasa Returns for a Shorts Rematch
Briasa provides the most obvious reference point from last year’s race.
The Hawkes-trained gelding began favourite in the 2025 Shorts but was unable to repel Joliestar after she swept into the contest.
He finished second before later placing eighth in The Everest after settling further back than intended.
Briasa has already secured his position in the 2026 Everest and will use Saturday’s race to demonstrate that he can reverse the previous result.
He must also prove he has progressed sufficiently to threaten Ka Ying Rising.
Joliestar defeated him clearly in this race last year before finishing three positions ahead of him in The Everest.
That does not guarantee the same result.
Briasa has drawn an opportunity to secure a more favourable position, while Joliestar may be forced to concede him several lengths from barrier nine.
Private Harry adds another important layer.
The Nathan Doyle-trained sprinter possesses considerable raw speed and also enters the race with his Everest place secured.
His presence should prevent the race from becoming a soft tactical contest.
The result will not determine which horse performs best in The Everest, particularly with another 100 metres and four weeks of improvement available.
It will establish the early Australian sprinting hierarchy.
Royal Ascot Form Raises Joliestar’s Ceiling
Joliestar returns to Australian racing after producing one of the strongest international sprinting performances of the European summer.
She finished third in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes over 1200 metres at Royal Ascot.
Almeraq defeated Japan’s Satono Reve in a photo finish, with Joliestar and Stolen Kiss close behind. Less than half a length separated the first four horses.
Joliestar briefly appeared capable of winning after moving into contention during the final stages.
She was ultimately overpowered but demonstrated that her form could transfer beyond Australian conditions.
That performance is significant for two reasons.
It confirmed Joliestar belongs among the world’s strongest sprinters and proved she could perform after travelling internationally.
It also required Waller to manage a different preparation from the previous spring.
Joliestar needed time to recover from her English campaign, complete quarantine and rebuild towards Australian racing.
Her two trials suggest she has handled that process, but The Shorts will provide the first definitive evidence.
International travel can leave a horse physically sound while reducing the sharpness required to win an elite 1100-metre race.
Joliestar must demonstrate that her Royal Ascot campaign has strengthened rather than flattened her.
McDonald Faces an Everest Decision
The Shorts could also influence which Waller-trained mare McDonald rides in The Everest.
Joliestar has secured the Chris Waller Racing slot, while stablemate Lady Shenandoah also has a confirmed position in the $20 million sprint.
McDonald has established successful partnerships with both horses.
Joliestar is the proven open-age sprinter and defending Shorts winner. Lady Shenandoah offers younger legs and the possibility of further improvement.
No final riding decision has been publicly confirmed.
A dominant return from Joliestar would make the choice considerably easier.
McDonald understands her racing pattern, has ridden her in major races and believes she is performing better than when finishing fifth in last year’s Everest.
An unlucky or flat performance would complicate the situation.
Waller will judge the run within the context of the preparation rather than requiring Joliestar to peak first-up, but McDonald must eventually decide which mare gives him the greatest chance against Ka Ying Rising.
The Shorts is therefore both a lead-up and an audition.
Beating Ka Ying Rising Requires Improvement
Joliestar does not need to defeat the Hong Kong champion on Saturday.
Ka Ying Rising remains in quarantine before travelling to Sydney after smashing his own Sha Tin course record and extending his winning sequence to 21.
The Sporting Base detailed how Ka Ying Rising is preparing to fly back to Sydney for his Everest defence.
His record-breaking return established the standard every Australian contender must reach.
Joliestar has already raced against him and understands the scale of the challenge.
She finished fifth in the 2025 Everest despite receiving a favourable midfield run and travelling strongly approaching the turn.
McDonald said the mare briefly lost her action through the dip before recovering.
That moment may have cost her a placing.
It does not fully explain the margin between Joliestar and Ka Ying Rising.
The defending champion was simply superior.
For Joliestar to reverse the result, she must return as a better horse, secure a favourable race shape and produce an uninterrupted run through the final 400 metres.
Her Royal Ascot performance suggests improvement is possible.
The Shorts will show whether it has occurred.
Victory Is Important—but Not Essential
Joliestar can be beaten on Saturday without damaging her Everest prospects.
She is resuming over 1100 metres, drawn outside several major rivals and programmed to reach her peak four weeks later.
Waller will not want the mare subjected to an unnecessarily severe race merely to defend her Shorts title.
However, there is a difference between being beaten under unsuitable circumstances and failing to produce the acceleration expected from an elite sprinter.
Joliestar must finish strongly.
She must show she has retained the speed displayed at Royal Ascot and provide evidence that another month of training can carry her towards a career-best Everest performance.
A victory would confirm her position near the top of Australia’s sprinting division.
A strong closing defeat could be equally encouraging.
A flat performance would create legitimate concern.
McDonald believes the stronger race will suit her.
Waller has backed that judgement by committing his slot before the mare has raced this spring.
Twelve months ago, Joliestar used The Shorts to announce that she was ready for The Everest.
She now faces the same task against a stronger field, from a harder barrier and with the defending champion waiting in quarantine.
