Tony Gollan has trained plenty of outstanding young horses, but could Tengun Tommy be his next big-money winner? After another dominant performance at Doomben, the unbeaten youngster is already being set for a $3 million summer target.
Tengun Tommy made it three consecutive wins on Saturday, overcoming the widest barrier to score comfortably in the QTIS 2YO Handicap (1200m) at Doomben as the $1.75 favourite. It continued a remarkable run since joining Gollan’s stable, with the son of Flying Artie now unbeaten in three starts for Queensland’s champion trainer.
The performance immediately had Gollan looking ahead to one race.

Rather than pressing on this preparation, the leading trainer confirmed Tengun Tommy will now head to the paddock before returning for the Queensland summer carnival, with the $3 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas on the Gold Coast his major target.
“He will be put away now for the summer carnival and we will set him for the Magic Millions Guineas,” Gollan said.
Gollan believes the gelding is only scratching the surface.
Unlike many early-season juveniles, Tengun Tommy has always looked more like a three-year-old prospect, with the trainer convinced the step to 1400 metres—and potentially even a mile—will bring out the best in him. He also praised the youngster’s versatility, saying he can either race on speed or settle back depending on how races are run.
The improvement has surprised even his trainer.
After Tengun Tommy transferred from Chris Anderson’s stable, Gollan initially expected to get just one run from him before spelling him. Instead, the gelding has continued to thrive, reeling off victories at Doomben, the Sunshine Coast and back at Doomben to stamp himself as one of Queensland’s most exciting young horses.
There also appears to be plenty more improvement to come.
Gollan described the youngster as immature and still learning his craft, believing his size and raw ability mean his best racing won’t be seen until next season. That’s an exciting prospect given he’s already proving too good for his rivals.
If Tengun Tommy continues on his current trajectory, the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas could be just the beginning.
And judging by Gollan’s confidence, the stable already believes it has a horse capable of competing for one of Queensland’s richest prizes.
