Panthers sign linebacker Jadeveon Clowney

According to the Associated Press on Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers have signed defensive end Jadeveon Clowney of Rock Hill, South Carolina to a two-year deal worth $20 million. The Panthers will be the sixth National Football League franchise Clowney has played for following five seasons with the Houston Texans (2014 to 2018), one season with the Seattle Seahawks (2019), one season with the Tennessee Titans (2020), two seasons with the Cleveland Browns (2021 and 2022), and one season with the Baltimore Ravens (2023).Â
This past season in Baltimore, Clowney had 43 combined tackles (24 solo tackles and 19 assisted tackles), nine tackles for a loss, 19 quarterback hits, 9.5 sacks, five pass deflections, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. The fumble recovery came in a 20-10 Ravens win over the Los Angeles Chargers on November 26.
For three straight seasons while with the Texans from 2016 to 2018, Clowney was selected to the Pro Bowl. In 2016, the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, had 52 combined tackles (40 solo tackles and 12 assisted tackles), 16 tackles for a loss, 17 quarterback hits, two pass deflections, one forced fumble and six sacks. The two pass deflections came in a 19-12 Texans win over the Kansas City Chiefs on September 18, 2016 and in a 21-20 Texans win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on December 18, 2016. The fumble recovery came in a 22-17 Texans win over the Indianapolis Colts on December 11, 2016.
In 2017, Clowney had 59 combined tackles (41 solo tackles and 18 assisted tackles), 21 tackles for a loss, 21 quarterback hits, 9.5 sacks, two pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries for 75 yards and one touchdown. The pass deflections came in a 13-9 Texans win over the Cincinnati Bengals on September 14, 2017, and in a 33-17 Texans win over the Cleveland Browns on October 15, 2017.
In 2018, Clowney had 47 combined tackles (38 solo tackles and nine assisted tackles), 16 tackles for a loss, 21 quarterback hits, nine sacks, one pass deflection, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, and one touchdown from a fumble recovery. The major score from a fumble recovery came in a 37-34 Texans win over the Indianapolis Colts on September 30, 2018.
