From Matt Burton slotting home a late-game golden point winner against Nicho Hynes and the Sharks to Blues hopeful Bradman Best blasting two 100-metre tries past the Parramatta Eels, it was a weekend full of stunning plays.

Here’s the standout NRL players from Round 17, as selected by The Sporting Base team.

1. James Tedesco (Roosters)

Sydney demolished the Wests Tigers at Allianz Stadium and Tedesco was right at the heart, running for 286 metres and setting up a try alongside a four-pointer of his own.

2. Dominic Young (Roosters)

Not much to do late on as the Roosters went to Daniel Tupou’s side, but his early two tries set up the 40-6 shellacking.

3. Jesse Ramien (Team)

Ramien’s metre-eating would have been the difference if not for the gold point heartbreak; he churned up 193 in 84 minutes and built the rearguard with 31 tackles.

4. Bradman Best (Knights)

Two tries (both nearly the length of the field) and more than 350 run metres for his troubles. You won’t see a stronger Origin audition all year.

5. Greg Marzhew (Knights)

Linked up with the red-hot Best to score just before and just after the half-time buzzer.

6. Matt Burton (Bulldogs)

Even if we leave out the golden point kick that won the Bulldogs the game (which came from 35 metres out too, mind you), then Burton was a terror against the Sharks. He ran for 133 metres and lanced up 693 kicking metres, keeping Cronulla penned in across the tight game.

7. Te Maire Martin (Warriors)

The Warriors barely noticed Shaun Johnson on the sideline with Martin having a direct hand in four tries.

8. Terrell May (Team)

It only took May 48 minutes to get a try, five tackle busts, and clock up 126 rampaging run metres. The Tigers pack—including potential million-dollar man Stefano Utoikamanu—couldn’t handle him.

9. Reed Mahoney (Team)

Tensions bubbled over in the Sharks ranks as Mahoney needled them. Made 54 tackles to boot.

10. Mitchell Barnett (Team)

Barnett’s late swap to prop delivered the goods. He played out 72 minutes and may have earned himself a promotion from New South Wales’ 18th man right into the top 17.

11. Raymona Faitala-Mariner (Team)

Scored the Dragons’ opening try, grinded out 80 minutes, and broke six Dolphins tackles. His 33 tackles were just icing.

12. Jaydn Su’A (Team)

What’s with Dragons and Origin back-up games? Last time was Zac Lomax, this time Jaydn Su’A, who trucked out 216 run metres (107 after contact even) and made eight tackle breaks as St George Illawarra burst into the eight with a win over the Dolphins.

13. Nelson Asofa-Solomona (Team)

Jahrome Hughes was at his season-high best against in the Storm’s low-scoring victory and it was ‘Big NAS’ and his explosive 33 minutes that let the Melbourne halfback play.
