Opinion: It may be time for a sixth major in women’s golf

One thing that makes women’s golf distinct from men’s golf is the fact there are five majors. The majors in women’s golf take place in three countries–the United States, France and Great Britain.

I normally argue that less is more. If you have read the majority of my posts over the last seven years, I have never been a strong supporter of change. I normally like the status quo, and have completely bristled with frustration and disappointment with the horrendous changes being made recently by the Canadian Football League.

On Thursday, Tom Abbott of Golf Channel brought up an interesting suggestion during the first round of the 2026 Women’s British Open. Is it time to add a sixth major in women’s golf, and is it the right time for the tournament to be in Asia?

The tennis and golf markets have included Asia in recent years, but have not included them when it comes to a major championship. Is it time for women’s golf to make the leap?

The one country that makes sense to host a major is South Korea. The reason is because of their excellence in women’s golf over the last two decades. We are seeing amazing performances from Hae-ran Ryu this year, and there are six Asian golfers currently ranked in the top 10.

The other reason is the booming Asian economy. It consists of 60% of the world’s population and has a gross domestic product of $44 trillion. It is simply time for a major to be in Asia. It makes financial sense and moral sense.

CHANCES ARE YOU’RE ABOUT TO LOSE.
