No player wants to see their time at a club end this way. For Will Warbrick, one cruel moment against the Sydney Roosters appears to have brought his Melbourne Storm career to a heartbreaking finish.
The New Zealand international left Allianz Stadium in tears after suffering what is believed to be a ruptured Achilles during Melbourne’s 14-6 loss, with the injury ending his 2026 season and his Storm career before his scheduled move to the New Zealand Warriors.
Warbrick went down in the 25th minute while attempting to defend Billy Smith’s try in the corner.
The 28-year-old immediately clutched at his lower left leg before collapsing to the turf, with teammates quickly gathering around as medical staff rushed onto the field. He was visibly emotional as he was helped onto the medicab, knowing his season was almost certainly over.

The scenes left commentators stunned.
“He’s in tears. He knows his fate,” Andrew Voss said on Fox League, while Greg Alexander added: “He’s heartbroken. He knows it’s his last game for the Melbourne Storm after signing for the Warriors.”
The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for Melbourne.
Already without Cameron Munster, Jahrome Hughes, Xavier Coates, Eli Katoa and Tui Kamikamica, Craig Bellamy’s side has endured one of the toughest injury runs in the club’s history. Warbrick’s setback leaves the Storm even thinner as they fight to keep their finals hopes alive.
Speaking after the match, captain Harry Grant admitted the squad was devastated for one of its most popular teammates.
“We probably didn’t realise the severity of it at the time,” Grant said. “That’s not what you want to see, especially with Will with the footy he’s been playing for us. He’s a really good clubman.”
Coach Craig Bellamy also reflected on the cruel ending to Warbrick’s time in Melbourne.
“It’s a shame for Will to end his career with us on that note. He’s been tremendous for us and I’m sure he’ll have great success at the Warriors,” Bellamy said.
Warbrick had already agreed to join the Warriors on a three-year deal from 2027, meaning Friday night’s injury is expected to be his final appearance in Storm colours. After scoring 16 tries this season and becoming one of Melbourne’s most reliable finishers, it is a heartbreaking way for his chapter at the club to close.
Instead of a farewell lap later this season, Warbrick’s final memory as a Storm player may be one of the toughest moments of his career.
