Storm come away with statement win over sloppy Chooks

Wins over the Rabbitohs and Roosters in a span of six days has the Melbourne Storm sitting back in the top four after six weeks of action after a shaky start to the season.

After conceding the first try of the contest, Melbourne scored three tries in 16 minutes – the second and third coming with Roosters lock Victor Radley in the bin – to take an 18-8 lead into the sheds.

Xavier Coates scored his second and third tries of the night in the early stages of the second half to give the Storm what proved to be an unassailable 28-8 advantage.

Cameron Munster was sensational for the Storm finishing with a try, two try assists, and a game-high 209 run metres with eight tackle breaks whilst Nick Meaney scored one, assisted on two others, and ran for 123 metres.

The Roosters missed 26 more tackles and completed 18 less sets than Melbourne in an outing they would prefer to scrub from their memory.

Mitchell shows out in Good Friday thumping

A Latrell Mitchell masterclass has propelled the Rabbitohs to a 50-16 win over the Bulldogs in their annual Good Friday showdown at Accor Stadium.

Jake Averillo raced away to score a 90-metre, scrum try with his first touch of the game to send the Kennel into delirium, however, the day belonged the Bunnies who poured in 26 unanswered, first-half points to take a 26-6 lead into the sheds.

Five South Sydney tries in the final 18 minutes – including three to Campbell Graham in the final 12 – worsened the scoreboard for an undermanned Dogs outfit.

Mitchell finished the afternoon with 26 points – one shy of the Rabbitohs record – thanks to a trio of tries and seven goals to go along with two try assists and a game-high 191 run metres.

Graham scored three of his own to go along with 150 run metres whilst Cody Walker scored one try and assisted on three others.

Dolphins back in winners’ circle as concerns grow over Cowboys

The Dolphins are back in the top four after snapping their two-game losing streak with a strong 32-22 Good Friday victory over the Cowboys in Townsville.

Jamayne Isaako scored two tries in the opening 15 minutes to give the visitors an early lead before Kyle Feldt got the Cows on the board.

The Dolphins then added a trio of tries in just 10 minutes to go up 26-6 before Feldt grabbed his second on the stroke of halftime to breathe some life back into North Queensland.

Todd Payten’s men were on top for much of the second half and brought it back to 26-22 entering the final 10 minutes, however, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow claimed his second of the contest to put a bow on it for the Dolphins in the 78th minute.

Isaako and Tabuai-Fidow are now unbelievably atop the NRL’s try-scorers list with both players currently with eight-apiece – one ahead of Dom Young and Maika Sivo.

Tabuai-Fidow scored two, assisted on another, and ran for 136 metres with 11 tackle breaks whilst Tom Gilbert scored a try, ran for 154 metres from 19 carries and made 34 tackles.

For the Cowboys, Valentine Holmes scored a try and ran for a team-high 155 metres with 12 tackle breaks.

Penrith flex muscles in Manly rout

After a slow start to the year, the Penrith machine is again churning out wins with the defending champions dispatching of Manly 44-12 at BlueBet Stadium on Saturday.

It was all Penrith from the outset with Dylan Edwards snagging a first-half hat-trick to give the hosts a 32-0 half-time lead.

Edwards nabbed a fourth on the other side of half-time – the first four-try haul of his career – before the Panthers went into autopilot to come away with their second win by 30-plus in two weeks.

Edwards ran for 190 metres with 12 tackle breaks to go along with his quartet of tries whilst Nathan Cleary scored one, assisted on two others, and ran for 185 metres.

Penrith ran for an extra 932 metres, made 12 line breaks to zero, and broke 42 tackles to 17 in what proved a dominant win.

Raiders pull off major upset to hand Broncos first loss of season

The Raiders have pulled off one of their great wins in recent memory upsetting the previously undefeated Broncos 20-14 at Suncorp for their second win of 2023.

Canberra enjoyed a strong first half thanks to a Jordan Rapana double which gave them an early 14-4 lead.

Jordan Riki drew first blood for Brisbane on the other side of half-time before a 50th-minute Albert Hopoate aerial effort gave Canberra a 10-point lead into the final half-hour of the game.

Jesse Arthars scored for Brisbane with 10 to go to set up a grandstand finish before a stray knee from Martin Taupa’u split Rapana’s head in ugly fashion and resulted in a Canberra penalty as they held on for a phenomenal win.

Matthew Timoko enjoyed a strong outing for Canberra assisting on a try and running for 148 metres from 14 carries whilst Josh Papali’i ran for 156 metres from 15 carries and made 23 tackles without a miss.

For Brisbane, Payne Haas ran for 203 metres from 22 carries with six tackle breaks and made 29 tackles without a miss.

Titans pip Dragons at post as pressure mounts on Red V

The Titans have improved to 3-2 on the year after a down-to-the-wire, two-point win over the Dragons on the Gold Coast on Sunday afternoon.

After Francis Molo was binned for a high shot in the opening minutes of the game, the sides went blow-for-blow; Zac Lomax scored first for the Dragons before Jayden Campbell answered for the Titans to make it 8-8 at half-time.

Mikaele Ravalawa scored first in the second stanza for the Dragons before Phillip Sami – who had a belter of an afternoon – tied things at 14.

Ben Hunt scored what looked to be the match-sealer in 73rd minute for the visitors before Toby Sexton scored the true match-winner after the Gold Coast successfully regained the short kick-off following the Hunt try.

Sami scored a try, made three line breaks, and ran for a game-high 275 metres from 18 carries with 14 tackle breaks whilst Campbell scored a try, ran for 183 metres from 18 carries, and broke seven tackles.

For the Dragons, Hunt scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 134 metres with five tackle breaks whilst Ravalawa scored a try, ran for a team-high 171 metres, and broke six tackles.

Knights earn huge statement win over flying Warriors

Newcastle’s impressive start to the season has continued with Adam O’Brien’s men earning a compelling 34-24 win over the Warriors at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The Knights enjoyed a dominant start and took a 22-6 lead into half-time before the Warriors threatened to pull off a second big-time comeback in-a-row in the second half.

Tries to Kurt Mann and Greg Marzhew, however, dashed any hopes of a Warriors fightback as the Knights held on for their third win of the year.

Jayden Brailey left the field for the Knights at the hour-mark with a ruptured ACL and torn meniscus in a crushing blow for the club.

Lachlan Miller’s strong start to 2023 continued with the diminutive fullback running for a team-high 193 metres with six tackle breaks and a line break whilst Tyson Frizell scored a try, ran for 120 metres, and made 36 tackles.

The Warriors were led by Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad’s game-high 245 metres with a try assist whilst Adam Pompey scored a double, assisted on a try, and ran for 129 metres with six tackle breaks.

Eels scrape past Wests Tigers to cap off eventful Easter weekend

The Wests Tigers have dropped to 0-6 after falling to Parramatta 28-22 in their annual Easter Monday clash at Accor.

Tries to Clint Gutherson, Will Penisini, and Bryce Cartwright gave Parramatta an 18-6 half-time lead before a Maika Sivo four-pointer put them 18 ahead early in the second stanza.

Tim Sheens’ gutsy band of Wests Tigers embarked on a second-half, chasedown effort through tries to Asu Kepaoa, Brent Naden, and Junior Tupou, however, they fell six points after a frenzied final 10 minutes.

To make matters worse for the Wests Tigers, Adam Doueihi left the field with a season-ending ACL tear with nine minutes remaining.

Mitchell Moses was superb against his former-club assisting on four tries, running for 106 metres, and kicking for 542 metres whilst Ryan Matterson ran for team-high 191 metres from 20 carries and made 42 tackles.

For the Wests Tigers, Junior Tupou scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 221 metres with eight tackle breaks whilst Charlie Staines assisted on a try and ran for a game-high 238 metres.
