Tom Dearden has emphatically shut down months of speculation surrounding his future, declaring he has no intention of leaving the North Queensland Cowboys despite persistent rumours linking him with a move to Sydney.
The Cowboys co-captain fronted the media on Monday to address reports suggesting he was considering an early release from his contract for personal reasons, making it clear his commitment to the club has never changed.
Dearden Labels Exit Speculation “Nonsense”
Speaking publicly for the first time since the rumours emerged, Dearden expressed his frustration at having to respond to what he described as baseless speculation.

“I don’t feel like I should have to get up here and explain myself, because it’s just been a whole lot of nonsense,” Dearden said.
The Queensland and Australian representative reiterated that he remains contracted to the Cowboys until the end of 2029 and has no plans to seek an early release.
“I’m committed to the Cowboys until 2029.”
“I’m here at the Cowboys, I love playing for the Cowboys and I’d like for the private part of my life to be kept private.”
Rumours Took a Personal Toll
Reports over recent weeks suggested Dearden was considering relocating to Sydney because his partner, Millie Olliver, is based there and the couple are expecting their first child later this year.
While confirming his partner’s pregnancy has made the speculation more difficult, Dearden said the constant attention had unfairly impacted his family.
“I’ve got a private life with a partner who’s pregnant, and I’d like for all that to be kept private.”
“My partner’s had to deal with it as well… people ask questions and you always have to answer them.”
Despite the off-field distractions, Dearden stressed there had never been any change to his desire to remain in Townsville.
Cowboys Always Confident
The Cowboys and Dearden’s manager, Sam Ayoub, have consistently denied suggestions the star playmaker was looking for a release.
Ayoub previously described the rumours as unfounded, insisting Dearden “loves the club” and remained fully committed to the long-term contract he signed in 2023.
The speculation had intensified because Olliver runs a successful business in Sydney, but reports indicate she is expected to relocate to Townsville later this year.
Focus Turns to Recovery
Dearden is currently sidelined with a leg injury after an injury-interrupted 2026 campaign that also ruled him out of this year’s State of Origin series.
The 25-year-old is targeting a return following the Cowboys’ Round 25 bye as North Queensland continues its push for a finals berth.
For now, however, Dearden hopes Monday’s press conference finally puts an end to the speculation.
After making his position crystal clear, the Cowboys can turn their attention back to football knowing their captain remains firmly committed to the club’s long-term future.
