Michael Maguire has finally lost patience with Brisbane after the defending premiers were humiliated 40-6 by the Warriors at Suncorp Stadium.
The furious Broncos coach interrupted a question about his players’ motivation, declared their performance unacceptable and reportedly stormed out once the post-match press conference ended.
Brisbane conceded seven tries in the Round 24 defeat, slumping to a 6-15 record and registering more losses than any defending premier in Australian rugby league history.
“Not good enough, just plain and simple,” Maguire said.
“We won’t want to do that next weekend because we’ll cop the same. It was really disappointing, that one. We’re not playing the style that we know we’ve practised.”
Maguire Rejects Motivation Excuse
The most revealing moment arrived when captain Patrick Carrigan was asked whether Brisbane’s elimination from finals contention had made it difficult for the players to remain motivated.
Carrigan did not get an opportunity to respond before Maguire stepped in.
“I reckon that’s garbage,” Maguire said, according to Fox Sports’ report on Brisbane’s disastrous defeat.
“We’re playing the team next week that’s in the same boat. We’re playing for the Broncos.
“It’s easy to motivate people when you’re playing for the Broncos. They’re playing for a very good club.”
Brisbane will face Canberra next, with the Raiders also outside the finals race but coming off an impressive away victory over Cronulla.
That contrast appeared to irritate Maguire. Canberra continued competing despite having little left to play for, while Brisbane produced another lifeless performance in front of 38,916 supporters at Suncorp Stadium.
“The boys are playing for the Broncos jersey that they wear,” Maguire said.
“That is not good enough. I normally keep calm at these things. We need to have a good hard look at ourselves.”
Carrigan Admits Broncos Lacked Desire
Carrigan was equally critical when asked how the Warriors were able to establish a commanding advantage during the opening 20 minutes.
“Just a lack of desire and intent to do your job,” Carrigan said.
“It’s not good enough from us as players. We just got out-competed tonight, which was disappointing.”
Those comments will concern Broncos supporters more than any tactical explanation could.
Brisbane entered 2026 as the reigning premiers, but the intensity, defensive resilience and belief that carried the club to the 2025 title have disappeared.
The Broncos have now lost 12 of their past 13 matches and eight consecutive games at Suncorp Stadium. They could also fall to the bottom of the ladder, depending on other Round 24 results.
Wests previously held the unwanted record for the most losses by a defending premier after suffering 13 defeats in 1953. Brisbane have now lost 15 matches with three rounds remaining.
Reece Walsh Injury Compounds Disaster
The defeat was made worse when Reece Walsh left the field during the first half with a suspected high-ankle sprain.
Walsh was injured in a tackle involving Warriors fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, who was reported and sent to the sin bin. The Brisbane star later appeared on the sideline wearing a moon boot and will require scans to determine the extent of the damage.
When Maguire was asked about Walsh’s condition, he quickly returned the focus to his team’s effort.
“I’m more concerned about our performance,” Maguire said.
The Warriors also suffered a significant injury when Luke Metcalf hurt his hamstring after converting Alofiana Khan-Pereira’s intercept try.
Despite losing their halfback, New Zealand remained in complete control. Their forward pack dominated Brisbane through the middle, while the Broncos repeatedly failed to contain the Warriors around the ruck and on the edges.
Brisbane’s Premiership Defence Has Become an Embarrassment
Injuries, Adam Reynolds’ absence and Payne Haas’ impending departure have all contributed to Brisbane’s decline, but none fully explain the lack of resistance displayed against the Warriors.
Maguire had repeatedly defended his players during their losing run, insisting their effort remained strong even when results went against them.
He could no longer make that argument after Saturday night.
The Broncos are not simply experiencing a premiership hangover. They have produced the worst title defence measured by losses in the history of the competition and remain at risk of finishing with the wooden spoon.
Maguire’s future has received public backing from Brisbane officials, but performances like this will place every aspect of the football department under scrutiny.
The coach’s angry press conference may have been intended as a challenge to his players, but it also exposed the depth of Brisbane’s crisis.
Three matches remain for the Broncos to demonstrate the pride Maguire demanded. If they cannot respond now, a historically bad premiership defence could finish at the very bottom of the ladder.
