Sydney Roosters fans have reason to be nervous after contract negotiations with star halfback Sam Walker reportedly broke down, potentially leaving the club’s long-term playmaker free to negotiate with cashed-up rivals from November 1.
Walker remains contracted until the end of 2027 and is understood to prefer staying at Bondi, but the two parties are currently apart on price after his camp was left underwhelmed by the Roosters’ latest offer.
Walker rejects reported four-year offer
According to The Daily Telegraph’s report, the Roosters tabled a four-year extension that would keep Walker at the club until the end of 2031.
The proposed deal reportedly starts at approximately $1.1 million for the 2028 season before increasing through contractual clauses to as much as $1.4 million annually.
However, Walker’s camp reportedly believes those figures fall short of his market value, particularly with the NRL salary cap expected to increase and expansion clubs preparing to enter the player market.
The development represents a significant change from earlier reports suggesting the Roosters were considering an enormous long-term agreement potentially worth $13.5 million.
Walker has now placed negotiations on hold until after the season, allowing him to concentrate on the Roosters’ premiership campaign.
November 1 deadline could invite huge rival offers
Walker cannot leave immediately because his existing contract covers the 2027 season. However, if the Roosters cannot secure an extension beforehand, he will be permitted to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1 for the 2028 season and beyond.
The Perth Bears and PNG Chiefs loom as particularly dangerous potential suitors.
Both expansion clubs will need elite players around whom they can build their squads, and a proven representative halfback entering his prime would be among the most valuable signatures available.
Offers exceeding $1.5 million per season have already been suggested, while PNG’s potential tax benefits could make it extremely difficult for the Roosters to compete financially.
That does not mean Walker is preparing to leave. His preference reportedly remains to continue his career in Bondi, but allowing him to reach the open market would introduce a level of risk the Roosters would surely prefer to avoid.
Politis remains confident Walker will stay
Roosters chairman Nick Politis previously made his intentions clear, declaring that he wanted Walker to remain at the club for the rest of his career.
“I’ve spoken to Sam and I’ve told him I want him at the Roosters for life,” Politis said.
“Sammy has been fantastic for us. We have a great relationship and we want him to stay.
“I’m confident we can get a deal done.”
Walker’s manager Clinton Schifcofske has also insisted the halfback is not deliberately attempting to create a bidding war.
“It’s up to Sam to decide whether he wants to go to November 1, but his preference is to stay at the Roosters and he wants to be there,” Schifcofske said.
Those comments should offer supporters some reassurance, but preferences can change when rival clubs begin making life-changing offers.
Robinson questions how negotiations became public
Roosters coach Trent Robinson downplayed concerns about Walker’s long-term future while questioning how details from the negotiations reached the media.
“I don’t have any issues long-term about Sam and what he’s going to do,” Robinson said.
“I think our vision for the future with Sammy is really clear and our discussions have been around that.
“I’ve got no problem waiting until October to have that discussion either with the club because that means we can focus on football right now.”
Robinson appeared less impressed by the leak itself, suggesting only a limited number of people would have known what occurred during the meeting.
“It’s pretty clear how that comes out from management when there were only a couple of people in the meeting,” he said.
Why the Roosters cannot afford to lose Walker
Walker has developed into the type of player NRL clubs rarely allow to reach the open market: a 24-year-old representative halfback capable of controlling games, creating tries and handling goalkicking responsibilities.
The official NRL statistics list Walker with 18 try assists, 15 line-break assists, nine tries and 177 points across his first 18 appearances of the 2026 season.
He also announced himself at State of Origin level and produced a club-record 36-point performance against North Queensland, further strengthening his negotiating position.
The Roosters have invested heavily in Walker since his NRL debut in 2021 and clearly regard him as the central figure in their long-term plans. Losing him just as he enters his best footballing years would leave a hole that money alone may not fill.
There remains considerable time for both parties to reach an agreement, and placing talks on hold is not the same as requesting a release. However, the situation becomes much more dangerous if Walker is still unsigned when November arrives.
For now, Roosters supporters can take comfort from Walker’s stated desire to stay—but until his signature is secured, the possibility of an expansion club stealing their franchise halfback cannot be dismissed.
