Updated ~11:40am AEDT Sunday 4 October: Hunter New England Health said the five-year-old girl and 67-year-old man who were critically injured in the Wallsend crash have improved — both are now in a serious but stable condition, district chief Tracey McCosker said, according to the Newcastle Herald. The ABC’s Sunday report said four people have been discharged, with others remaining in hospital in stable condition.
Charges laid
Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, 18, has been charged after he allegedly crashed into a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters at Wallsend about 9.30am on Saturday, 3 October 2026, the ABC reported, citing court documents and a NSW Police statement.
According to the ABC, he faces three counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, three counts of negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and three counts of cause bodily harm by misconduct. NSW Police said his P1 Provisional licence has been suspended and the vehicle has been seized for forensic examination. He later appeared in Newcastle Bail Court, where bail was refused, the ABC reported.
Two other teens in the vehicle — males aged 18 and 19 — were not injured, police said. At Saturday’s media conference, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said officers were investigating reports the driver was “driving erratically”, lost control and went into the crowd, and that there was “no suggestion at all that it’s targeted or any ill motive,” the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Injured fans — latest hospital update
Ten people were taken to John Hunter Hospital after the crash at a roundabout on Newcastle Link Road as thousands lined the streets to farewell the Knights before Sunday’s NRL Grand Final against the Sydney Roosters.
Hunter New England Health, via the Newcastle Herald on Sunday morning, said a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man who were critically injured had improved and were both in serious but stable conditions. Four others a second five-year-old girl, a two-year-old girl, a 31-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man remained hospitalised in stable conditions. Three men aged 24, 25 and 27, and a 63-year-old woman, had been discharged.
Hunter New England Health said six people were still being treated on Sunday morning, with four in stable condition; four others had been discharged.
One of those injured, Chris Clancy, posted that he had a broken left collarbone requiring surgery and may have a sprained or broken right foot, and that he would spend grand final day in hospital. Knights captain Kalyn Ponga commented wishing him a recovery, the ABC reported.
How Saturday unfolded
Emergency services were called about 9.30am after reports a vehicle struck multiple people in the farewell crowd. The Guardian earlier reported a major response including helicopters and ambulances. The Knights team bus was diverted away from the procession.
Newcastle Knights CEO Peter Parr said the club’s thoughts were with everyone injured, their families and those who witnessed the crash. NRL chairman Peter V’landys and Premier Chris Minns also expressed support for those affected on Saturday. NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley described the crash as a “preventable” tragedy at the Saturday press conference.
