NRL: Nathan Cleary Opens Up on Future as Mary Fowler Factor Looms Over Panthers Decision

Nathan Cleary has finally addressed the biggest question hanging over his NRL future, admitting there is still no certainty over where he’ll be playing beyond 2027 as speculation continues to grow around the influence of partner Mary Fowler.

The Penrith superstar remains contracted until the end of the 2027 season, but with Fowler settled in England and several rival competitions expected to pursue his signature, his long-term future remains one of rugby league’s biggest talking points.

Speaking about his future, Cleary made it clear he isn’t rushing into a decision.

“I’m definitely not thinking about it too much at the moment.”

The four-time premiership-winning halfback explained his focus remains solely on football, adding there is still plenty of time before he needs to make a call on what comes next. According to Nine, Cleary said he intends to let things “play out” before making any long-term decision.

The comments come as Penrith prepares to open negotiations on a new contract extension.

The Panthers are eager to retain their franchise player beyond 2027, but they face a unique challenge.

Fowler has repeatedly stated she is happy at Manchester City and has no immediate plans to leave England while she continues playing at one of the world’s strongest women’s football clubs.

That has inevitably fuelled speculation that Cleary could eventually explore opportunities overseas.

In recent years he has acknowledged he would be open to experiencing another competition later in his career, whether that be rugby league in England or even a switch to rugby union, although he has never indicated an imminent departure from Penrith.

Fresh from leading New South Wales to the 2026 State of Origin series victory and winning the Wally Lewis Medal, Cleary’s value has arguably never been higher.

His dominant display in the decider reinforced why he is regarded as the game’s premier halfback and why Penrith will do everything possible to keep him at the club.

For now, however, there is no deadline.

Cleary remains under contract for another season beyond 2026, meaning Penrith has time to negotiate while the 28-year-old weighs up both his football ambitions and his personal life.

One thing is certain.

Any decision involving Nathan Cleary won’t simply shape the future of the Panthers.

It could alter the landscape of rugby league.
