Jarome Luai’s future at the Wests Tigers has taken another dramatic twist after a social media interaction from his father reignited speculation over the star playmaker’s relationship with coach Benji Marshall.
The cryptic activity comes just days after the Tigers confirmed Luai is free to negotiate an early departure for the 2027 season, with Parramatta widely tipped as the frontrunner for his signature.
According to Fox Sports, Luai’s father, Martin, reacted to a social media post claiming the relationship between Luai and Marshall had cooled after the four-time premiership winner committed to joining the PNG franchise from 2028.
The post suggested the pair were “not as close as they were… ever since he said I’m off to PNG”, with Martin responding with a hand emoji that many interpreted as endorsing the claim.
While a social media reaction is far from confirmation that a rift exists, it has added another layer to one of the NRL’s biggest ongoing contract stories.
Importantly, neither Luai nor Marshall has publicly stated their relationship has broken down.
In fact, when asked about Luai’s future after the Tigers’ loss to the Warriors, Marshall refused to be drawn into speculation, shutting down questions surrounding the halfback’s impending departure.
The timing of Martin Luai’s reaction is what has generated so much attention.
Only days earlier, the Tigers confirmed they had granted Luai permission to negotiate with rival clubs for 2027, bringing forward his exit before his planned move to the PNG franchise in 2028. The club has consistently maintained the decision was made with its long-term roster strategy in mind as it looks to build around younger playmakers, including Latu Fainu.
Luai himself has also posted cryptic messages on social media in recent days.
Following news of his likely departure, he shared the message:
“God’s plan, not mine.”
The post fuelled speculation that the decision had originated from the club rather than the player, although Luai has not publicly elaborated on its meaning.
Despite the mounting rumours, there is still no public evidence from either Luai or Marshall confirming a fallout between the pair.
The only confirmed developments remain that the Tigers have allowed Luai to explore opportunities elsewhere for 2027 and that the representative playmaker remains committed to finishing the 2026 season with the club before his next move is finalised.
Whether Martin Luai’s social media activity was intended to send a message or was simply an innocent reaction remains open to interpretation.
What it has done, however, is ensure the Jarome Luai saga continues to dominate headlines.
With the Tigers, Parramatta and the PNG franchise all featuring in the story, and speculation now extending to Luai’s relationship with his coach, this is a contract drama that shows no signs of ending anytime soon.
