The Warriors have announced themselves as genuine NRL premiership contenders—but Penrith’s biggest concern may extend well beyond their 28-12 defeat in Auckland.
Panthers co-captain Isaah Yeo faces an anxious wait after suffering a suspected pectoral injury during the first half at Go Media Stadium.
Yeo left the field in the 34th minute after pulling up sore following a tackle. He immediately clutched his chest before heading up the tunnel and taking no further part in the match.
Scans are required to determine the severity of the injury. If a pectoral tear is confirmed, the NSW captain could miss the remainder of Penrith’s season.
“It doesn’t look great,” Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said, according to ABC Sport’s match report.
“Obviously Yeoy’s a big loss and hard to replace, but that’s how it goes.
“If that’s the case, we’ll have to [replace him].”
Warriors overpower Penrith in Auckland
The Warriors produced one of their most impressive performances of the season, racing to an 18-0 half-time lead before closing out a 16-point victory.
Erin Clark opened the scoring in the fifth minute before returning halfback Luke Metcalf crossed seven minutes later.
Chanel Harris-Tavita added another try in the 31st minute after a powerful run and offload from Leka Halasima split Penrith’s defence.
The Warriors dominated the opening half physically, running for 1,008 metres compared with Penrith’s 624 while controlling 56 per cent of possession.
Penrith’s problems were compounded when Paul Alamoti was sent to the sin bin for a dangerous tackle on Halasima.
Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad extended New Zealand’s advantage to 22-0 shortly after half-time, leaving the ladder leaders facing a daunting comeback.
Nathan Cleary and Jaxen Edgar crossed during a late Panthers surge, but Metcalf’s second try in the 77th minute sealed the Warriors’ 28-12 victory.
The result moved New Zealand into third position and strengthened its claim as a genuine premiership threat.
Metcalf makes stunning NRL return
Metcalf was a late inclusion after Te Maire Martin suffered a hamstring injury at training.
Playing his first NRL match since Round 5, the halfback scored two tries, converted four of the Warriors’ five attempts and provided the kick that led to Nicoll-Klokstad’s try.
His performance was particularly impressive given he had spent recent weeks playing in the NSW Cup.
Metcalf is expected to join St George Illawarra next season, leaving Warriors coach Andrew Webster with another major halves decision once Martin and Tanah Boyd return from injury.
The Sporting Base previously examined Penrith’s mounting injury concerns involving Yeo, Nathan Cleary and Dylan Edwards.
Roosters draw level with Panthers
Penrith’s defeat also opened the door for the Sydney Roosters, who moved level with the Panthers on 36 competition points after defeating Canterbury 20-18 at Allianz Stadium.
The Roosters led 8-2 at half-time before the Bulldogs produced a rapid three-try burst through Jacob Kiraz and Lachlan Galvin to take an 18-8 advantage.
Billy Smith’s second try reduced the deficit before a miscommunication between Canterbury defenders allowed Salesi Foketi to pounce on a loose Sam Walker kick in the 69th minute.
Walker converted to put the Roosters ahead by two points, and Trent Robinson’s side survived the closing stages to record its seventh consecutive victory.
“We weren’t great, to be completely honest,” Smith told ABC Sport.
“Last year, we probably lose those games. Happy with the win.”
The Panthers remain first on points differential, but their looming clash with the Roosters now shapes as a potentially decisive battle in the minor-premiership race.
Canterbury’s loss leaves the club outside the top eight, while Sitili Tupouniua’s return lasted only five minutes before he reinjured his hamstring.
The Sporting Base has also covered the Roosters’ proposed record-breaking contract for Walker as the club attempts to secure its star halfback beyond 2027.
