Dylan Brown was warned that leaving Parramatta for Newcastle would be a costly mistake, but the $13 million playmaker is already proving his critics wrong. Nine months into his record-breaking Knights deal, Brown has helped transform the reigning wooden spooners into genuine finals contenders.
The 26-year-old has now revealed why he never doubted Newcastle’s potential, how he has embraced the responsibility of wearing the No.7 jersey and why life in the Hunter has made the move feel right both on and off the field.
Brown Never Doubted Newcastle’s Potential
Brown signed a 10-year deal with Newcastle worth a reported $13 million after spending seven seasons with the Eels. The Knights officially confirmed that his contract runs from 2026 until the end of the 2035 season.
The move attracted immediate criticism, with many questioning whether Brown was capable of becoming the dominant halfback Newcastle required.
However, Brown said he was surprised by the negative reaction because he could already see the quality within the Knights’ roster.
“I came to this team with no doubt of where we could reach in terms of potential,” Brown told Fox Sports.
Brown believed Newcastle simply needed to build confidence through a few early victories, with the club now sitting seventh and firmly involved in the finals race entering Round 21.
Why Brown Chose the Hunter
Money may have dominated the headlines surrounding the move, but Brown said his decision was also heavily influenced by his family and Newcastle’s lifestyle.
The region reminded him of his upbringing in Whangārei, with its strong community and quieter environment providing an attractive place to raise his young family.
Brown and his partner have since welcomed a baby in Newcastle, while he has also embraced his role as a stepfather.
“All sorts of things added up and it felt right to start somewhere fresh,” Brown said.
“I never look back.”
Embracing the No.7 Jersey
Brown spent most of his Parramatta career playing five-eighth but was shifted into the halfback role by new Knights coach Justin Holbrook.
The adjustment has required Brown to take greater control of Newcastle’s kicking game and attacking structure while working alongside Kalyn Ponga, Fletcher Sharpe and Sandon Smith.
Brown’s average kicking metres have climbed to 317 per game, while his involvement has increased to approximately 58 touches per match.
Brown admitted he was still learning how to play as a genuine halfback but said he was enjoying the added responsibility.
“I’m kicking a lot more and knowing when to play the ball and give it to who you need to, as well as choosing when to run and when not to run,” Brown said.
“I’m enjoying the extra responsibility.”
Knights’ Attack Transformed
Newcastle entered 2026 after collecting the wooden spoon and finishing the previous season as the NRL’s worst attacking team.
Under Holbrook, the Knights have adopted a faster and more unpredictable attacking style that has allowed Brown and Ponga to share the playmaking responsibility.
Former Roosters playmaker Luke Keary believes the system has helped Brown settle into the No.7 role without forcing him to become a traditional organising halfback.
Michael Ennis went even further, declaring Newcastle capable of challenging Penrith for the premiership due to the freedom and flexibility within its attack.
Brown has already delivered several decisive moments, including a match-winning field goal against the Dolphins and a crucial try-saving tackle against Cronulla.
Brown Backs Luai’s Parramatta Move
Despite leaving the Eels, Brown still maintains close relationships with former teammates and staff at Parramatta.
He also welcomed the news that Jarome Luai will join the Eels in 2027 and take over Brown’s former No.6 jersey.
Brown said he felt sympathy for Luai following the scrutiny surrounding his departure from the Wests Tigers but believes the move will benefit both the player and Parramatta.
“He’s a great player and for Parra to get him for a year, it’s awesome news for himself and for that club,” Brown said.
Brown Has Already Changed the Conversation
Newcastle’s investment in Brown remains enormous, with his contract not due to expire until he is 35.
However, the early signs suggest the move is delivering exactly what the Knights hoped for.
Brown has embraced the responsibility of leading Newcastle’s attack, found stability away from football and helped turn a struggling side into a legitimate finals threat.
The signing once dismissed as “silly” may instead become the decision that changed Newcastle’s future.
