Billy Slater has ended his five-year reign as Queensland coach after delivering three series victories and rebuilding the Maroons into an Origin force.
The Queensland Rugby League must now find a new leader after Slater confirmed he would not continue in the position in 2027.
As first reported by Fox Sports, the former champion fullback has stepped away following the expiration of the three-year extension he signed in 2023.
Slater leaves with an impressive coaching record of eight wins from 15 matches and three series victories across five campaigns.
He replaced Paul Green before the 2022 series and immediately delivered consecutive shields in 2022 and 2023. Queensland lost the 2024 series before reclaiming the trophy in 2025, but Slater’s tenure ended with defeat to New South Wales in the 2026 decider at Suncorp Stadium.
His departure is particularly surprising because he had indicated during the most recent series that he expected to remain involved without signing another formal contract.
“I won’t be signing another contract. This is not a contract job for me,” Slater said before Game Three.
“I really enjoy helping this group of men go and inspire our people of Queensland.
“When that changes, my position will change. Or if someone in the QRL decides there’s someone better for the job, I’m all for that as well.”
When asked whether he wanted to continue under a handshake arrangement, Slater replied: “Yep, pretty much. It might surprise you, but that’s how it is.”
He later attempted to calm speculation about his future by saying he did not anticipate leaving the position.
“I could be standing here in five years’ time doing the same thing,” Slater said before the decider.
“I love this position, I love what it means, I love the group of men in that dressing room and I enjoy helping them prepare for that game of football.”
Those comments make his eventual decision to step down a significant change of direction, although Slater has consistently maintained that his commitment would be determined by whether he still believed he could help the team.
Slater Leaves Queensland in a Strong Position
Slater inherited a Queensland side that had lost the 2021 series and immediately restored the belief and intensity historically associated with the Maroons jersey.
His attention to detail and willingness to make difficult selection decisions became defining features of his tenure. He also helped establish players including Reuben Cotter, Patrick Carrigan, Tom Dearden and Selwyn Cobbo as regular members of Queensland’s Origin program.
Slater’s influence stretched beyond results. His standing as a 31-game Maroons representative allowed him to reconnect the current generation with the traditions that shaped Queensland’s most successful period.
“It’s an incredible honour to be the Queensland coach,” Slater said after signing his previous extension.
“I’m a proud Queenslander and this team means a lot to me. It has been a massive part of my life.”
Who Replaces Billy Slater?
Queensland has not announced an official shortlist, but several prominent names are expected to enter the discussion.
Former Maroons captains Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston will inevitably be mentioned because of their Origin experience and existing connections to the Queensland program.
Ben Te’o could also emerge as a serious candidate after joining Slater’s staff as an assistant coach for the 2026 series. Te’o previously coached Queensland’s under-19 side and has experience working inside NRL systems.
Gold Coast Titans coach Josh Hannay and Manly coach Anthony Seibold have also been linked with the position, although their club commitments could complicate any approach.
The QRL does not need to rush its appointment, but replacing Slater will be difficult. Queensland is losing more than a coach. It is losing the central figure responsible for reshaping the Maroons after one of the program’s most uncertain periods.
Will Slater Eventually Coach Melbourne?
Slater’s departure will also intensify speculation about a possible return to the Melbourne Storm.
Storm chairman Matt Tripp has previously described the club legend as a dream candidate to eventually succeed Craig Bellamy. Slater played all 323 of his NRL matches for Melbourne and remains closely connected to the organisation.
However, there is no confirmation that Slater is preparing to accept an NRL coaching position.
He has previously questioned whether the demands of coaching a club would suit his family, media and business commitments.
“I never say never but I don’t see myself doing it,” Slater said when asked about becoming an NRL coach.
“With NRL coaching you have to give 95 per cent of your time to doing that and that’s why I don’t see myself in that space in the near future.”
Leaving Queensland does not prove Slater is heading to Melbourne, but it removes one considerable obstacle if the Storm position becomes available.
For now, his immediate legacy is secure. Three series victories from five attempts represents an outstanding return, even if his reign ended with the Origin shield in New South Wales hands.
