Flemington trainer Nick Ryan has been charged by Racing Victoria stewards with possessing a prohibited substance, and both of his Victoria Derby Day runners were withdrawn at Flemington on Saturday.
Stewards said a stable inspection by Racing Victoria’s Compliance Assurance Team on Saturday morning led to the charge under AR 250 (a), according to the stewards’ statement published by Racing.com. Ryan reserved his plea, and the inquiry was adjourned until Monday.
The particulars of the charge allege that Ryan “was found to have in his possession, in the glove box of his motor vehicle, two syringes of Darbepoetin Alfa which is a prohibited substance under Prohibited List A of the Australian Rules of Racing”.
No finding has been made and no penalty has been announced.
Anglais and Doubt Time withdrawn
Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Ryan’s two runners at 12pm: the filly Anglais from the Wakeful Stakes (Race 3) and Doubt Time from the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (Race 6).
“Bearing in mind the serious nature of the charge, stewards acting under the provisions of AR 23 (d), ordered the withdrawal of Anglais (Race 3), and Doubt Time (Race 6) at 12pm from their respective races at Flemington,” the stewards’ report said.

The inquiry was opened after a report from Rhys Melville, Racing Victoria’s Manager Compliance Assurance Team. Stewards took evidence from Melville, Racing Victoria regulatory veterinarian Dr Edwina Wilkes and Ryan.
What happens next
Darbepoetin alfa is a long-acting erythropoiesis-stimulating agent and is listed in the first entry of Prohibited List A alongside EPO, The Straight reported. Substances on that list are prohibited at all times.
The stewards’ statement relates to alleged possession. It does not allege that either horse was given the substance. 7NEWS also reported the charge and the withdrawals.
The inquiry is due to resume on Monday, 2 November, the day before the Melbourne Cup.
