According to the Canadian Press on Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles have named Nick Sirianni of Jamestown, New York as their new head coach. This is the first head coaching job Sirianni has had in his NFL career. He takes over from Doug Pederson, who was fired, on January 11.
Sirianni had been the offensive co-ordinator of the Indianapolis Colts the last three seasons. Prior to that, he worked with the Kansas City Chiefs organization for four years from 2009 to 2012 as their offensive quality control coach, assistant quarterbacks coach, and wide receivers coach; and the Rams organization from 2013 to 2017 as their quarterbacks coach, offensive quality control coach and wide receivers coach.
At the collegiate level, Sirianni spent two seasons as the defensive backs coach at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio, from 2004 to 2005, and three seasons from 2006 to 2008 as the wide receivers coach at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. It is interesting that Sirianni made the large jump from coaching at the NCAA Division II level, all the way up to an assistant coach in the National Football League.
With the Colts this past season, Sirianni got to work directly with Phillip Rivers, who retired this week. The hiring of Sirianni is interesting because Carson Wentz is closer to Rivers when it comes to style of quarterback than the mobile Jalen Hurts.
There was speculation that one reason why Pederson was fired by the Eagles was because he wanted Wentz as their long-term quarterback, while management wanted Hurts. The initial belief was there was a difference in philosophy that ending up costing Pederson his job. Now, that may not have been the case. The Eagles are reportedly wanting Wentz back and wanted Sirianni, who worked for pocket-passing quarterback Frank Reich the last three seasons in Indianapolis, to make Wentz better. Might there be a quarterback controversy in Philly in 2021? You bet, and it has just got started.
