Nelly Korda leads at midway point of the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship

The first 36 holes are now in the books at the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship at the Highlands Golf Course in Atlanta, Georgia. Nelly Korda of Bradenton, Florida is the leader after the second round.

Korda is already double digits under par at -11, after a sizzling second-round score of nine-under-par. On Friday, Korda went on a birdie-fest on the front nine to remember. She went one-under-par on seven of the first nine holes to post a fantastic score of 29. Korda birdied the second, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth holes. Then on the back nine, Korda bogeyed the 10th hole, before collecting birdies on the 11th, 14th, and 17th holes.

Korda became the fifth player in Women’s PGA Championship history to post a score of 63 during a single round of the tournament according to Beth Ann Nichols of Golf Week. She joins 1984 champion Patty Sheehan of Middlebury, Vermont; Meg Mallon of Natick, Massachusetts (1999); Kelly Shon of South Korea (2017); and 2020 champion Sei Young Kim of South Korea (2020). The 1999 LPGA Championship winner was American Juli Inkster, while the 2017 Women’s PGA Championship winner was American Danielle Kang.

The only other player in contention at the moment is Lizette Salas of Azusa, California, who is one stroke back at -10. Salas is considered a trailblazer when it comes to women’s golf because of her Hispanic heritage.

Both Salas and Korda are looking for their first major title. Salas has one career win on the LPGA Tour, and that came at the 2014 Kingsmill Championship in Williamsburg, Virginia. Korda is a five-time champion on the LPGA Tour, and is currently third on the Rolex Women’s Golf World Rankings. Nelly’s sister Jessica is ranked 13th in the world. Nelly and Jessica won the first two tournaments of 2021. Nelly won the Gainridge Championship and Jessica won the Diamond Resort Tournament of Champions.
