Nelly Korda has septuple bogey at US Women’s Open

The first day of the 2024 United States Women’s Open is in the books and the biggest story was clearly the difficulty of the Lancaster Country Club. There were only four golfers under par and 2021 United States Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso has the lead at -2.

One of the biggest stories from round one was centred around world number one Nelly Korda of the United States. Korda had a disastrous par three 12th hole. Just how disastrous was this hole for Korda? Well, she posted a score of 10. That’s right. It was a +7, as three times Korda landed in the water on this one hole.

Once Korda’s round was all done, she was at +10. The par for 18 holes at the Lancaster Country Club is 70, and Korda posted a score of 80. However, this is not the first time Korda has posted a score of 80 at the United States Women’s Open. She had the same score in the fourth round of the 2023 United States Women’s Open at Pebble Beach.

You would not expect this type of performance from Korda. When you are ranked number one in the world, you are there for a reason. The top reason is consistency. In 2024, Korda has already won six times highlighted by the Chevron Championship in April where she won her second major of her career.

Now Korda’s biggest test in Pennsylvania will be trying to make the cut. She is currently in 113th place, and two strokes back of the cut line which is presently at eight over par.
