Nathan Sobey scored 24 points with six rebounds and six assists as the South East Melbourne Phoenix beat the Illawarra Hawks 113-96 at John Cain Arena on Sunday afternoon in NBL27 Round 3.

ESPN listed the result as Final: Phoenix 113, Hawks 96, with quarter scores 23-23, 36-18, 26-32 and 28-23. Fox Sports also carried the Full Time scoreline as SEM 113–ILL 96 shortly after 5:00pm AEDT. South East Melbourne led 59-41 at half-time after a dominant second term, then held off an Illawarra surge in the third.

Sobey and Daniels pace the Phoenix

Sobey finished with 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 4-of-9 from three and a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line, plus six rebounds and six assists, per the ESPN box score. Dash Daniels added 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while D’Shawn Schwartz scored 15. Jordan Hunter had 12 points and six rebounds, and Angus Glover contributed 11 points off the bench.

Phoenix made 16 threes to Illawarra’s five and went 29-of-43 from the free-throw line. ESPN listed South East Melbourne at 2-3 after the home win.

Hawks answer late but fall short

Kelan Martin led Illawarra with 17 points. Milton Doyle had 14 points and 11 assists, Makur Maker scored 14, and Johny Narkle added 13 points with seven rebounds. The Hawks outscored the Phoenix 32-26 in the third quarter and briefly cut a 24-point deficit late in the fourth, but could not complete the comeback.

The result is separate from Tasmania’s overtime win over Brisbane covered earlier this weekend — see TSB’s JackJumpers OT wrap and Thursday’s Armstrong winner vs United.

Adelaide’s Round 3 tip against the New Zealand Breakers was still listed as Pre Game on Fox Sports around full time of this match.
