There was a rather surprising retirement announcement on Wednesday according to Sam Amico of Hoops Wire. That is because veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon of Atlanta, Georgia has retired at the age of 32.

Brogdon had signed a one-year contract with the Knicks on September 16. However with the NBA season about to commence in less than a week, Brogdon did not believe he was strong enough mentally or physically for the grind of another NBA season.

The reason why this was a bit of a surprise is because the Knicks are favoured to win the Atlantic Division this year, and Brogdon was expected to have a significant role with the Knicks coming off the bench.

Brogdon has been effective in coming off the bench in the past. In 2022-23, he won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award while with the Boston Celtics. This was one of two major personal awards Brogdon won in his NBA career. He also won the NBA Rookie of the year while with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2016-17.

In Brogdon’s NBA career he played with five five franchises. He was with the Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards.



In 463 NBA regular season games, Brogdon averaged 15.3 points per game, 4.7 assists per game and 4.1 rebounds per game. He had a field goal percentage of .463, free throw percentage of .874 and three point percentage of .388. Brogdon was known as a consistent and reliable free throw shooter. While with the Bucks in 2018-19, he led the NBA with .928 free throw percentage.
