NBA: Lakers’ $12.5 Billion Sale Sparks Trump Conspiracy Theories After Stunning Three-Day Deal

The Lakers have changed owners for the second time in less than a year, and the extraordinary timing has sent conspiracy theories into overdrive.

Former Disney chief Bob Iger and venture capitalist Josh Kushner have agreed to purchase the franchise from Mark Walter at a record US$12.5 billion valuation, subject to approval from the NBA’s board of governors.

Lakers Sold in Record-Breaking Deal

The US$12.5 billion agreement represents the highest reported sale price for a professional sporting franchise.

Walter only became the Lakers’ majority owner in October 2025 after the NBA approved his purchase of the Buss family’s controlling interest at an approximate US$10 billion valuation.

If approved, the latest transaction would mean the franchise’s valuation increased by US$2.5 billion—or 25 per cent—in less than a year.

According to Fox Sports’ report on the Lakers sale and resulting conspiracy theories, the identities of the buyers and Walter’s current legal scrutiny have fuelled speculation about why the deal happened so quickly.

However, no evidence has established that the Trump administration influenced the sale or that the transaction was connected to the investigations involving Walter-controlled companies.

Iger Says Agreement Took Three Days

The speed of the transaction has generated almost as much attention as its enormous valuation.

Iger said he and Kushner had originally been exploring the possibility of pursuing a future NBA expansion franchise in Las Vegas.

That plan changed when they learned Walter could be prepared to sell the Lakers.

“We were involved in pursuing the new franchise in Vegas,” Iger told the California Post.

“While that happened, it was suggested to us that maybe Mark Walter would be interested in selling his stake in the Lakers.”

“We immediately decided that given the value of the franchise and the iconic nature of the team, that we would be really smart to pursue it. The deal came together in three days. It’s that simple.”

The opportunity allowed Iger and Kushner to acquire an existing global sporting institution rather than wait for the NBA to approve expansion and then construct an organisation from the ground up.

Why Trump’s Name Has Entered the Story

Kushner is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, who is married to US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump.

That family connection has prompted online claims that the sale may have been influenced by the Trump administration, particularly because Walter is under federal scrutiny.

US prosecutors are reportedly examining whether two insurers controlled by Walter failed to disclose that private-credit holdings backed other ventures connected to him. The US Securities and Exchange Commission is reportedly conducting a parallel investigation.

Walter has not been publicly charged with a crime in relation to those reported investigations.

There is also no verified evidence that Josh Kushner, Jared Kushner, Donald Trump or anyone within the administration pressured Walter to sell the Lakers.

The timing is undeniably unusual, but unusual timing is not proof of political interference.

Until documents, sworn testimony or credible reporting establishes a direct connection, the suggestion that the administration engineered the deal to benefit the president’s extended family remains an unproven conspiracy theory.

Josh Kushner Must Exit Miami Heat Investment

Kushner founded venture-capital firm Thrive Capital and also serves as co-founder and vice-chairman of health insurer Oscar Health.

He currently holds a minority interest in the Miami Heat and previously held a stake in the Memphis Grizzlies.

NBA ownership rules will require Kushner to sell his Heat interest before completing the Lakers acquisition.

Kushner and Iger released a joint statement describing themselves as lifelong basketball supporters and promising to respect the franchise’s history.

“As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honoured for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world,” they said.

“Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans and the city of Los Angeles.”

Iger Brings Major Entertainment Experience

Iger recently completed his second tenure as Disney chief executive after overseeing a transformative period for the entertainment company.

His experience includes managing global media brands, negotiating major acquisitions and operating within the increasingly interconnected worlds of sports broadcasting and entertainment.

He and his wife, Willow Bay, already hold a controlling stake in Los Angeles-based women’s football club Angel City FC.

Iger has also worked with Kushner’s investment businesses and had been involved in the possible Las Vegas expansion bid.

The Lakers present an opportunity to combine Iger’s entertainment experience with one of the world’s most recognisable sporting brands.

That could create new commercial opportunities around international expansion, media production, sponsorships and the franchise’s enormous celebrity following.

Walter Walks Away With Enormous Paper Gain

Walter described his short period controlling the Lakers as one of the greatest honours of his life.

“Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honours of my life—an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans and a city that treats this team as family,” Walter said.

“The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead.”

Walter retains interests in several other sporting organisations, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, Chelsea and the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

Sources cited by ESPN said he is selling only his Lakers interest as part of the transaction.

The difference between the Lakers’ reported US$10 billion valuation in 2025 and US$12.5 billion price in 2026 does not necessarily represent Walter’s personal profit. The precise size of the stake being transferred, financing arrangements, transaction costs and ownership structure have not been publicly disclosed in full.

It nevertheless represents a remarkable increase in the franchise’s overall valuation.

Luka Dončić Welcomes New Owners

The ownership change arrives during an equally significant basketball transition.

The Lakers have moved on from LeBron James and are now building their future around Luka Dončić, who welcomed Iger and Kushner in a public statement.

“Being a Laker means everything to me, and I’m excited to get back on the court and bring a championship to LA,” Dončić wrote.

“I’ve gotten used to big changes over these last few years, but I know that no matter what, there is no limit to the potential of this iconic franchise.”

“I look forward to meeting Josh and Bob so we can get to work building something special in LA together.”

Dončić’s position makes the franchise particularly attractive to incoming owners.

Rather than purchasing a team approaching a complete rebuild, Iger and Kushner inherit a global superstar capable of leading the Lakers’ basketball and commercial operations for years.

Sale Still Requires NBA Approval

The transaction is not yet complete.

The NBA’s board of governors must approve the ownership group, its financing and the proposed transfer of control. The board is scheduled to meet in September, although the approval process can take several weeks.

Until that vote occurs, Walter remains the Lakers’ controlling owner.

The league will also need to resolve Kushner’s existing interest in Miami and confirm the incoming group satisfies all ownership and financial requirements.

There has been no public indication that NBA approval will be withheld.

Strange Timing Does Not Prove a Conspiracy

The Lakers being sold twice within a year is extraordinary.

A US$2.5 billion valuation increase is extraordinary.

A buyer with a close family connection to the sitting president acquiring the franchise from an owner whose companies are facing federal scrutiny is also certain to attract questions.

Those circumstances explain why conspiracy theories have emerged. They do not validate them.

The confirmed facts are that Kushner and Iger made an aggressive offer, Walter accepted it and the reported agreement values the Lakers at US$12.5 billion.

Everything beyond that requires evidence.

For now, the greatest surprise may be the simplest explanation: Walter received an offer delivering a staggering increase on the valuation he agreed to only months earlier and decided it was too lucrative to reject.
