NBA: Kawhi Leonard Trade Hits Another Roadblock as Raptors Refuse to Finalise Blockbuster Deal

2 weeks ago - Sportingbase NBA: Kawhi Leonard Trade Hits Another Roadblock as Raptors Refuse to Finalise Blockbuster Deal Image
Kawhi Leonard’s blockbuster return to the Toronto Raptors remains in limbo after another major twist, with the franchise refusing to complete the trade while the NBA continues its investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers.

The proposed deal, which would send Leonard back to Toronto in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and draft assets, cannot be finalised until the league completes its salary-cap investigation involving Leonard and the Clippers.

Raptors Won’t Complete Deal Until Investigation Ends

According to Fox Sports, Toronto has made it clear it will not formally complete the trade while uncertainty surrounds the NBA’s investigation.

The league is examining allegations that the Clippers may have circumvented the salary cap through an endorsement arrangement involving Leonard when he signed with Los Angeles in 2019. The Clippers have consistently denied any wrongdoing, and no findings or penalties have been announced.

The ongoing investigation has effectively frozen one of the biggest trades of the NBA offseason, leaving both franchises waiting for a resolution before the deal can become official.

NBA Investigation Could Stretch Into 2027

The uncertainty surrounding Leonard’s future has only grown after recent reports suggested the investigation may not conclude before the start of the 2026-27 season.

If the NBA, the Clippers and the National Basketball Players Association cannot agree on the investigation’s findings, the matter could proceed to arbitration, potentially delaying a resolution until 2027.

Until then, Leonard technically remains tied to the Clippers despite the reported agreement between the two teams.

James Harden Still Waiting for His Next Team

Elsewhere in free agency, former MVP James Harden remains unsigned despite continued interest around the league.

Fox Sports reports Harden is among the biggest names still available, with several contenders monitoring the veteran guard as they look to strengthen their backcourts before training camp.

Cavaliers Continue Pursuit of Young Wings

The Cleveland Cavaliers are also actively exploring ways to improve their roster, with Peyton Watson and Jonathan Kuminga emerging as priority targets.

Reports indicate Cleveland has continued discussions around both players as the franchise looks to add younger, more athletic wings capable of complementing Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley. Any potential move would likely require a sign-and-trade agreement and further salary-cap manoeuvring.

Offseason Still Waiting on Its Biggest Domino

The Leonard situation has become one of the defining stories of the NBA offseason.

With Toronto unwilling to finalise the trade until the investigation is resolved, one of the league’s biggest moves remains on hold. That uncertainty continues to impact the wider market as teams wait to see whether Leonard ultimately returns to the Raptors or remains with the Clippers.
