NBA: ‘I Wouldn’t Touch Him In A Million Years’: Scout’s Brutal Russell Westbrook Verdict

2 weeks ago - Sportingbase NBA: ‘I Wouldn’t Touch Him In A Million Years’: Scout’s Brutal Russell Westbrook Verdict Image
Has Russell Westbrook played his final NBA game? One longtime league scout believes teams should steer clear of the former MVP, delivering a ruthless assessment as Westbrook remains unsigned deep into free agency.

The anonymous scout questioned Westbrook’s shooting, defence and ability to function within a structured system—but his opinion tells only one side of the story.

Scout delivers savage Westbrook assessment

Speaking to Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel during a discussion about potential additions for the Miami Heat, the scout did not hold back when Westbrook’s name was raised.

“I wouldn’t touch him in a million years,” the scout said.

The evaluator reportedly questioned whether teams could rely on Westbrook from game to game, acknowledging that the guard could still produce impressive performances while criticising his overall fit.

The scout’s central argument was blunt: “He’s not going to fit into a system.”

Westbrook’s shooting and defensive consistency were also criticised as possible reasons for teams to look elsewhere.

It is important, however, to place those comments in context. This was the opinion of one anonymous scout discussing possible Heat recruits—not a confirmed explanation provided by every NBA team.

No organisation has publicly declared that it is avoiding Westbrook for those reasons.

Westbrook remains unsigned

Westbrook became an unrestricted free agent after completing his one-year contract with the Sacramento Kings.

The 37-year-old appeared in 64 games during the 2025-26 season and averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds in 29 minutes per game.

He shot 42.7 per cent from the field and 33.8 per cent from three-point range. Those numbers demonstrate that he can still contribute, but his efficiency and 3.3 turnovers per game may concern contenders searching for a dependable supporting guard.

Westbrook’s production also needs to be assessed alongside his playing style. He remains most effective with the ball in his hands, attacking the basket and creating in transition.

That can make him an awkward fit for teams that already have established primary playmakers or require their reserve guards to provide reliable outside shooting.

Is the criticism too harsh?

The scout’s assessment is confronting, but saying Westbrook cannot help any NBA team would be difficult to justify solely from his latest season.

A player averaging more than 15 points and six assists still offers tangible production. Westbrook also brings rebounding, pace, competitiveness and extensive postseason experience.

The issue may be less about whether he can play and more about whether a suitable role exists.

Would Westbrook accept limited minutes and occasional nights outside the rotation? Could he remain effective without controlling the offence? Would a contender trust him during tight playoff possessions?

Those questions are likely influencing his market as much as his raw statistics.

Westbrook has already shown a willingness to accept smaller contracts and reduced roles during the latter stages of his career. However, his aggressive approach can still produce volatile results, particularly when his shot is not falling.

A remarkable career facing an uncertain ending

The Sacramento Kings signed Westbrook for his 18th NBA season in October 2025, making them the seventh franchise of his career.

He previously represented the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets.

Westbrook won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award in 2017 after becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double across an entire season. He is also a nine-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA selection and the league’s career triple-double leader.

That résumé guarantees his place among the most accomplished guards in NBA history, regardless of how his career ends.

The uncomfortable reality is that reputation alone will not earn Westbrook another contract. Teams must decide whether his strengths can outweigh the compromises required to accommodate him.

One scout has made his verdict painfully clear. The rest of the league has not—but every week Westbrook remains unsigned will only fuel speculation that his extraordinary NBA career may already be over.
