NBA: “I Had to Do a Lot of Pill-Taking”: Dwyane Wade Reveals the Brutal Reality Behind His Hall of Fame Career

Dwyane Wade built one of the greatest careers in NBA history despite playing through pain that would have ended many players’ careers before they truly began.

The three-time NBA champion has revealed the extraordinary measures he took to keep his body functioning after having his left meniscus removed at just 19 years old, admitting his preparation extended far beyond what fans ever saw on the court.

Doctors Believed He Had Just Five Good Years

Speaking on his The Check-In podcast, Wade reflected on the devastating diagnosis he received after undergoing knee surgery during his college career at Marquette.

He revealed doctors told the Miami Heat before the 2003 NBA Draft that his knee would likely only hold up for around five years.

“When I came in, Doc told me this later in my basketball journey. He said, ‘We only gave you five years.’”

Instead of seeing his career end early, Wade went on to play 16 NBA seasons, win three championships, earn 13 All-Star selections and claim the 2006 NBA Finals MVP award.

“I Had to Do a Lot of Pill-Taking”

Wade explained that remaining on the court required constant management behind the scenes.

“I had to do a lot of things behind the scenes. I had to do a lot of masking. I had to do a lot of pill-taking. I had to do a lot of strengthening.”

The Hall of Famer credited renowned performance trainer Tim Grover for helping him strengthen the muscles surrounding his knee in an effort to reduce the pressure on the joint.

“We tried to keep this VMO strong. We tried to keep these quads strong. We tried to keep these hamstrings strong. We tried to keep all those things strong so I could take pressure off this knee,” Wade explained.

Learning to Reinvent His Game

Without a meniscus, Wade knew he couldn’t rely on explosive athleticism forever.

Instead, he adapted his playing style and leaned on his basketball IQ to remain one of the league’s elite guards.

“I figured out how to still be effective, knowing I couldn’t do certain things… I learned how to still be successful, knowing I didn’t have a meniscus.”

That evolution allowed Wade to remain an All-Star well after injuries robbed him of the breathtaking explosiveness that made him one of the NBA’s most unstoppable players during his prime.

One of the NBA’s Greatest “What Ifs”

Wade has previously admitted he believes injuries prevented him from reaching an even greater level.

Earlier this year, he reflected that he had a “Hall of Fame career in five years” before recurring knee issues gradually changed the trajectory of his career.

Considering what he achieved despite playing without a meniscus for virtually his entire NBA career, many fans are left wondering just how much more the Miami Heat legend could have accomplished with a healthy body.
