Kyrie Irving could emerge as Miami’s next blockbuster target amid a report that Dallas may showcase the nine-time All-Star before exploring a trade near the February deadline.
The Heat have already transformed their roster by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis before adding Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr.
However, Miami still lacks an elite point guard capable of consistently creating shots in the half court.
Irving would emphatically solve that problem.
A report from Heavy Sports claims Dallas intends to play Irving through January, rebuild his value following a lengthy injury absence and then assess its options before the trade deadline.
That does not mean Miami and Dallas have discussed a deal.
It does mean one of the most talented guards in NBA history could become available while the Heat are attempting to complete a championship roster.
Mavericks Reportedly Prepared to Test Irving’s Market
Heavy’s Sean Deveney reported that Dallas could use the first half of the season to demonstrate Irving’s fitness and determine what rival teams would offer.
“Like a lot of veterans, the idea is to play him through January, build value and see if something can be done at the deadline,” Deveney reported.
The Mavericks have not publicly confirmed that plan, and Irving has not requested a trade.
Dallas could still decide that keeping the veteran alongside Cooper Flagg represents its best option, particularly if Irving returns to his previous level and the team begins the season strongly.
The report should therefore be treated as an indication of what the Mavericks may consider rather than confirmation that they have decided to move him.
An unnamed Western Conference executive suggested Irving’s value could rise to at least one first-round pick if he returns averaging approximately 24 or 25 points.
That assessment is plausible.
It is not a guarantee of what Dallas will demand or what another organisation will pay.
Irving Must First Prove He Is Healthy
Any trade discussion depends upon Irving successfully returning from the torn ACL he suffered in his left knee in March 2025.
The injury ended a season in which he averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting 47.3 per cent from the field and 40.1 per cent from three-point range.
Those numbers explain Miami’s potential interest.
Irving remains one of the NBA’s best isolation scorers and most creative finishers when healthy. He can generate efficient offence without requiring a system to create an advantage for him first.
His availability is the concern.
Irving missed the entire 2025–26 season while recovering from the injury and will enter the new campaign at 34 years old.
Even if he is medically cleared, Dallas must determine whether his speed, lateral movement and ability to create separation have returned.
Opposing teams will also want to see him handle the workload of regular NBA games before surrendering valuable players or draft selections.
A productive return would transform Irving from a distressed contract into one of the deadline’s most attractive potential targets.
A physical setback could eliminate the market almost entirely.
Kyrie Would Fix Miami’s Most Obvious Weakness
The Heat have assembled an extraordinary frontcourt around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
Thompson provides movement shooting, Andrew Wiggins offers athleticism on the wing and Portis can stretch the floor from the frontcourt.
What Miami still lacks is an elite perimeter creator.
Irving could initiate the offence, break down defenders without a screen and punish teams for loading the paint against Antetokounmpo.
A starting group featuring Irving, Thompson or Wiggins, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo would be extremely difficult to defend.
Opponents would need to choose between allowing Irving to attack individual coverage or sending assistance away from one of the most dominant interior scorers in basketball.
Irving has also demonstrated that he can succeed beside a ball-dominant superstar.
He won the 2016 championship alongside LeBron James in Cleveland and helped Dallas reach the 2024 NBA Finals while playing with Luka Doncic.
Miami would not need him to dominate every possession. It would need him to create efficient offence whenever Antetokounmpo encountered a crowded paint or Adebayo operated away from the basket.
That combination could give Erik Spoelstra the most talented starting lineup of his coaching career outside the LeBron-era Heat.
A Trade Would Be Financially Complicated
Irving is owed approximately US$39.4 million during the 2026–27 season and holds a player option for the final year of his three-year, US$119 million contract.
Miami could not simply absorb that salary.
The Heat would need to send sufficient money to Dallas while complying with the NBA’s salary-matching rules and restrictions applying to teams operating near the tax aprons.
Andrew Wiggins would be an obvious name in any speculative construction because he carries a substantial salary and would provide Dallas with an experienced two-way wing.
However, Heavy’s report does not identify a confirmed Miami offer or claim Wiggins has been placed into negotiations.
The Heat could also need to include another contract, a younger player or draft compensation depending upon Irving’s value and both teams’ financial position at the deadline.
Dallas would have little reason to accept unwanted long-term salary merely to help Miami construct another superteam.
If Irving returns to All-Star form, the Mavericks should have several interested teams and could demand a genuine first-round pick or valuable prospect.
Miami has already surrendered important assets to acquire Antetokounmpo, making another major deal considerably harder to complete.
Dallas Has Reasons to Consider Moving Him
Irving’s contract gives the Mavericks an obvious decision to make.
He can exercise his player option for 2027–28, but there is no guarantee he will do so if he returns strongly and believes another team will offer a longer agreement.
Dallas could retain him for the entire season and risk losing control of the situation during the offseason.
A trade would allow the Mavericks to convert an aging guard into a draft asset or younger player who better fits Flagg’s timeline.
The No.1 draft pick has quickly become the organisation’s most important long-term piece following the Luka Doncic trade.
Irving can help Flagg immediately, but their career timelines are completely different. Irving will be 35 before the end of the season, while Flagg is still at the beginning of his NBA development.
Dallas must decide whether Irving can help it contend now or whether his greatest value lies in what he could return through a trade.
That decision does not need to be made before he plays.
Waiting until January gives the Mavericks time to assess their record, Irving’s health and the desperation of potential buyers.
Miami Must Decide Between Irving and Jrue Holiday
Irving is not the only experienced point guard connected with the Heat.
A hypothetical trade involving Jrue Holiday has also been proposed as a way to reunite the two-time champion with Antetokounmpo.
The two guards would give Miami very different strengths.
Holiday is the safer defensive fit. He can organise the offence, guard the opposition’s best perimeter player and operate without requiring a large number of shots.
Irving offers considerably more individual scoring and late-game creation.
A lineup containing Irving, Thompson, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo would carry defensive questions at the guard positions, particularly when facing younger and more athletic backcourts.
Spoelstra could protect Irving by surrounding him with Wiggins, Giannis and Adebayo, but keeping Wiggins would make matching Irving’s salary more difficult.
Holiday would preserve Miami’s defensive identity.
Irving would raise its offensive ceiling.
The better option may ultimately depend upon the acquisition cost.
Irving Could Make Miami the East Favourite
Philadelphia has assembled an extraordinary group featuring James, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.
The defending champion New York Knicks must also remain central to any Eastern Conference discussion.
Miami already possesses enough talent to challenge both teams.
Adding Irving would remove the Heat’s most obvious offensive weakness and give them another proven playoff scorer capable of deciding close games.
The potential move still faces several enormous obstacles.
Irving must return healthy, Dallas must decide to trade him, Miami must create a legal financial package and the Heat must outbid every other interested team.
None of those outcomes is guaranteed.
The significant development is that Dallas may be prepared to listen if Irving rebuilds his value before the deadline.
Miami does not have a deal in place.
But if the Mavericks genuinely open the door, Pat Riley will almost certainly be waiting outside it.
