Marzhew recommits to Knights with deal that will likely keep him to end of career
May 14, 2026
The Knights have secured another star in their explosive backline, with powerhouse winger Greg Marzhew officially signing a three-year contract extension to remain in the Hunter until at least the end of the 2029 NRL season.
Marzhew had been free to negotiate with rival franchises since November 1 last year, and had spoken to several other NRL teams, but eventually decided that he wanted to stay with Newcastle. There were several more cashed-up packages tabled for the 29-year-old, but he turned them down to (likely) see out his playing career in red and blue.

The winger forced himself to the top of the retention list in Newcastle after a red-hot start to the 2026 season, combining with Bradman Best on the left side of the Knights’ attack for 15 tries – thirteen of which are Greg’s alone.
Marzhew’s eventual re-signing comes just days after an historic individual haul where the Newy winger equalled the club’s best ever tryscoring record in a single game when he ran in five against the last-placed St George Illawarra Dragons down in Wollongong. The Knights hadn’t won in the Illawarra heartland since the early 2010s but chalked a 44–10 victory.
“Greg has been in stellar form; he’s thriving outside Bradman, and we’re pleased he has recommitted to the club. Greg is an important signing,” Knights head of recruitment Peter O’Sullivan said in the club release.
“He is extremely popular within the playing group and throughout the club, and our community loves him.”

Knights head coach Justin Holbrook echoed how important the signing was, too, pointing out that “Greg is an extremely important part of our left edge. After being a late starter in the NRL, Greg has improved each year, with his form this season showing he is a world-class winger. This contract extension is a great reward for his hard work.”

Marzhew originally debuted on the Gold Coast in 2021 and played two seasons there for 25 appearances and 15 tries. He was then traded to the Hunter in 2023, with Chris Randall heading the other way in the swap deal.
The Knights winger is also an international player, appearing once for Samoa in 2023.
