Manu looking for NRL team for 2027 before he joins PNG in inaugural season

Joey Manu is now on the hunt for a one-year NRL deal next year, after agreeing to a two-year deal to play centre for the PNG Chiefs in the expansion club’s inaugural campaign.

While Manu’s longer-term future is tied up, his rugby league return isn’t plotted until 2028 when the Chiefs join the league, meaning he’s a free agent for 2027.

Complicating matters somewhat is that he will be signed through part of next year as he rounds out his €1 million deal with the French rugby squad Racing 92. That hasn’t stopped several clubs from reaching out early, though, The Sporting Base understands, with conversations now underway.

While the expansion club hasn’t said where he’ll play yet, Manu is likely bound for the centres in 2028. The club already has Brian To’o and Alex Johnston to play on the wings, and Zac Lomax to plug in as the other centre.

AJ Brimson is also speaking to Chiefs general manager of football Michael Chammas about playing fullback. He’s on a $900,000-a-year deal with the Titans, but can leave early.

Other stars on the Papua New Guinea side’s hit list include Hudson Young, who waived away a $3.3 million extension offer from Canberra because he wants to speak to PNG, as well as Jacob Preston (who is likely leaving the Bulldogs) and the Panthers’ Liam Martin.

Martin could yet sign a three-year Penrith deal, but that will be thrashed out this week.
