MAHER’S ON FIRE WITH HIS MELBOURNE BABIES

It was with a great degree of satisfaction that Ciaron Maher remarked that pre-Christmas was a good time for his stable to be dominating two-year-old races, as he has an eye on carrying that through to the major juvenile races.

Maher remarked after Unit Five had taken out the Magic Millions Vic 2YO Classic (1100m) at Caulfield Heath on Saturday.

It was Maher’s fourth two-year-old winner in Melbourne since the start of November, which is a notable feat as there have only been a handful of races in that age group in that period.

His winners have been Tornado Valley and Calamari Ring, which were both at Flemington, and this move he has won with Milsons Point and Unit Five.

Both Milsons Point and Unit Five were successful at their debuts.

Maher said that Unit Five will join Tornado Valley in being set for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 17.

Milsons Point and Calamari Ring are being set for the Blue Diamond Stakes.

“I can’t thank my team enough. The system works very well. This is the time of the year for two-year-olds, and that’s what it’s all about,” Maher said.

Maher decided to back Unit Five up five days after he had won a jump-out at Cranbourne, something he didn’t normally do.

“He’s just professional. He was very calm in the yard and behind the gates.”

“It was an easy watch. I’m rapt with the horse and his progression. Normally, we wouldn’t trial them that close, but he seems to find things easy,” Maher said.

Again, the Maher stable combined with Tom Stockdale to win a major race as the pair were successful the week before in The Supernova at Pakenham.
