A month ago, American women’s golf star Lexi Thompson of Coral Springs, Florida announced her intention to retire from women’s golf at the end of 2024. Now she is leading after the first round of the 2024 Women’s PGA Championship at the Sahalee Country Club in Seattle, Washington.

Thompson posted a score of four-under-par after six birdies and two bogeys. The 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship winner had a great start as she birdied the first three holes. That was followed by birdies on the ninth, 12th and 14th holes. Thompson’s bogeys were on the 10th and 16th holes.

Two golfers are in second place at -3. There you can find world number one and two-time major champion Nelly Korda of Bradenton, Florida, and 2021 ANA Inspiration winner Patty Tavatanakit of Bangkok, Thailand. Korda’s major titles came at the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship and the 2024 Chevron Championship.

There are then 11 golfers tied for fourth place at -2. There you have 2023 United States Women’s Open champion Allisen Corpuz of Honolulu, Hawaii, 2023 Evian Championship winner Celine Boutier of Clamart, France, Leona Maguire of County Cavan, Ireland, Charley Hull of Kettering, England, Japan’s Akie Iwai, Thailand’s Arpichaya Yubol, South Korea’s Amy Yang, American Caroline Inglis of Eugene, Oregon, Japan’s Mao Saigo, Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom, and 2019 Women’s British Open champion Hinako Shibuno of Japan.

There are then seven golfers tied for 15th place at -1. This group consists of Celine Borge of Norway, Ayaka Furue of Kobe, Japan, 2023 Women’s PGA Championship winner Ruoning Yin of China, 2019 Women’s PGA Championship winner Hannah Green of Perth, Australia, 2014 Evian Masters champion Hyo-joo Kim of South Korea, Japan’s Miyu Yamashita, and American Sarah Schmelzel of Phoenix, Arizona.
