LeBron James Explains Why He Chose the 76ers Over Every Other NBA Contender

LeBron James has finally revealed why Philadelphia was the team that convinced him to continue his legendary career. After weeks of speculation linking him to Miami, Cleveland and Golden State, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer announced he will join the 76ers on a team-friendly two-year deal in pursuit of one final championship.

The 41-year-old said the decision came down to one thing above all else — winning. Rather than chasing another lucrative contract, James accepted a two-year deal worth US$8 million (A$11.4 million) with a player option, allowing Philadelphia to maximise its championship window.

“I Still Have More to Give”

In a video announcing his decision, James admitted he considered retirement before deciding he still had unfinished business.

“I still have more to give,” James said, confirming this would likely be the final major decision of his NBA career.

The move ends an eight-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers, where James won the 2020 NBA championship and further cemented his status as one of basketball’s greatest players.

Why Philadelphia Won the Race

Philadelphia’s championship-ready roster proved impossible for James to ignore.

He joins former MVP Joel Embiid, All-Star Tyrese Maxey, recently acquired Jaylen Brown and highly rated rookie VJ Edgecombe in what shapes as one of the NBA’s strongest line-ups entering the 2026-27 season.

Fox Sports reports the 76ers are also closing in on a reunion with one of James’ former championship-winning teammates, further strengthening their bid for the title.

A Historic Opportunity

James now has the chance to achieve something no player in NBA history has managed.

Should Philadelphia win the NBA championship, he would become the first player to win titles with four different franchises after previously lifting the Larry O’Brien Trophy with Miami, Cleveland and the Lakers.

The move also marks James’ return to the Eastern Conference for the first time since leaving Cleveland for Los Angeles in 2018.

Free Agency Finally Breaks Open

James’ announcement finally ends the NBA’s biggest free agency storyline.

His decision is expected to trigger the remaining marquee signings across the league, with veterans including James Harden, Bradley Beal, Russell Westbrook and DeMar DeRozan now expected to finalise their futures after weeks of waiting.

For Philadelphia, however, the wait has been worth it.

The 76ers have landed arguably the greatest player of his generation, while James has given himself one final chance to add a fifth NBA championship before bringing the curtain down on an extraordinary career.
