Australia’s Josh Giddey shines in Thunder smackdown over the Celtics

The Oklahoma City Thunder had their most impressive win of the season on Tuesday as they defeated the Boston Celtics 150-117. Josh Giddey of Melbourne led the Thunder attack by scoring 25 points.

Giddey’s 25 points came almost a complete year after making NBA history by becoming the youngest player ever to record a triple double. On January 2, 2022, he had 17 points, 14 assists and 13 rebounds in a 95-86 Thunder loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Giddey was 19 years and 84 days old.

On Tuesday, Giddey was one of five Thunder players to score more than 20 points. The others were Canadian Luguentz Dort of Montreal, Quebec (23 points), Tre Mann of Gainesville, Florida (21 points), Isaiah Joe of Fort Smith, Arkansas (21 points), and Jalen Williams (21 points).

The 150 points scored by the Thunder are the most in Oklahoma City Thunder franchise history. However it should be noted that the Seattle SuperSonics had more than 150 points on five separate occasions. On November 9, 1989, Seattle lost 155-154 to the Milwaukee Bucks. On December 2, 1988, the SuperSonics beat the Los Angeles Clippers 154-104. On January 22, 2006, the SuperSonics beat the Phoenix Suns 152-149, on April 6, 2008, the SuperSonics beat the Denver Nuggets 151-147, and on April 2, 1988, the SuperSonics beat the Phoenix Suns 151-107. The Thunder organization moved from Seattle to Oklahoma City in 2008.

The Thunder are now at 16 wins and 21 losses. Their previous highest point total this season was 145 points in a 145-135 Thunder win over the New York Knicks on November 13.

The 33-point win over the Celtics was the first time this season Oklahoma City won a basketball game by 20 points or more. Their previous most dominant win was by 19 points and came on November 11 in a 132-113 win over the Toronto Raptors.
