According to Golf Channel on Monday, Keegan Bradley of Woodstock, Vermont has been named the captain for the United States Ryder Cup team in 2025. At 39 years of age, Bradley will be the youngest Ryder Cup captain for the United States since the late Arnold Palmer was the American captain at age 34 in 1963.
Palmer was in fact a player captain in Atlanta that year. The United States beat Great Britain 23-9, with Palmer posting a record of four wins and two losses.
Bradley is best known for winning the 2011 PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club. There he posted a four-round score of -8, and went on to beat Jason Dufner of Cleveland, Ohio. Dufner went on to win the 2013 PGA Championship at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.
Europe has won eight of the last 11 Ryder Cups since the turn of the century, with the Americans winning in 2008, 2016 and 2021. The winning American captains in that time were Paul Azinger of Holyoke, Massachusetts (2008), Davis Love III of Charlotte, North Carolina (2016), and Steve Stricker of Edgerton, Wisconsin (2021). Like Bradley, Azinger and Love III are major champions. Azinger won the 1993 PGA Championship, and Love III won the 1997 PGA Championship.
The selection of Bradley is also interesting when you consider the fact that he could very well be a player captain, like Palmer was in 1963, and Woods at the 2019 Presidents Cup in Australia. Bradley is currently 19th in the Official World Golf Rankings and the 12th top ranked American. He has six PGA Tour wins with the last title coming at the 2023 Travelers Championship.
