Kalyn Ponga is back on the training field just two weeks after breaking his arm, and the Kiwis have refused to rule their superstar fullback out of a Rugby League World Cup semi-final return.
Ponga ran at New Zealand’s training session on the Gold Coast on Wednesday, although he did not take part in any contact work, RNZ reported.
The Newcastle Knights fullback broke his arm on his Kiwis debut against Australia in the tournament opener, but stayed on the field for another 20 minutes before he finally came off.
What Stacey Jones said
Kiwis coach Stacey Jones said Ponga’s status was day-to-day and that he expected to know more about his availability next week.
“He’s day-to-day, we didn’t rule him out straight away,” Jones told reporters on the Gold Coast, according to RNZ. “It’s just good to see him out on the training field.”
“When a player’s got that mindset and that calibre of player, you give him every chance,” Jones said.

Semi-final the target
Ponga will not be available for New Zealand’s final pool match against Fiji this weekend, but he is expected to be back for the semi-final if the Kiwis qualify, 1News reported.
RNZ reported that New Zealand need to beat Fiji to make sure of a place in the semi-finals.
Kini keeps the No.1 jersey warm
Titans flyer Keano Kini will wear the No.1 jersey again against Fiji at Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday, after running for 183 metres and breaking eight tackles in the win over the Cook Islands, NRL.com reported.
“Knowing how tough Kalyn is and he stayed on for 20 minutes with a broken arm, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s back in the next game or so,” Kini told NRL.com.
“KP is looking good, and hopefully he can come back in the next few games and help us try and win the World Cup.”
