Kalgoorlie Selections & Staking Plan: Saturday 2nd October

The Ascot Spring/Summer racing carnival is fast approaching and we are now starting to see the cream of the WA racing crop returning to the track in the lead up to the best racing period of the year. Bob has got a few of his carnival hopes resuming here in the cerise and white and it’s a really open midweek card at Belmont. Cutaway in the straight and how it is playing will be crucial for one of our bets so stay tuned.

Alcina

Alcina was the runner that stood out for me here as one where you just know what you’re gonna get with her. Ever since coming across to Kal and settling in with Josh Brown she’s been absolutely flying. The fresh effort was really solid in what was actually a very strong 58+ contest
She drops in grade to a far weaker 53 here, only rises half a kilo at the weights, she’s going to get the most beautiful run smothered away on the back of the leader. All the others have potential sure and can probably win this race on their day but I’ve just got my reservations and the only concern I can find with her is needing a bit of luck to pop off the leaders back (hopefully) if she rolls of the fence when they straighten. Each way all day.

Race 5 – 2:52PM RAGLAN DRILLING HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

Staralign

Another race where Staralign looks incredibly hard to beat. Was an absolute moral beaten in the Coolgardie Sprint, then last start won the Yarradule Stud Sprint when holding off Moschard late coming from well back. I just think Pike’s smart enough to know the horse he wants to follow to take him into this race, that he’ll just hop on the back of and tag Indigo Blue (A horse I have my doubts on in terms of how genuine she is) who should at the very least east take him into the race
The weight won’t be an issue, his form from last prep just goes far and above what any of these have been doing themselves (around the likes of Captain Kaos, Not To Be Mist, Miss Conteki, Leading Girl, Naughty By Nature, I could continue) and yeah, for me he just looks your winner. $2.25 is just a bit skinny and am hoping for a better price late. Want anything over $2.50 to be having a go.

Drops back in trip and maps to have to circle them all from last but who would you rather have than the Wizard in the saddle? Horse is absolutely flying, happy to be on small if we see longer than $5.

Blazing Tycoon

Really liked the run of Blazing Tycoon last start in a race I think will hold up strongly as a form reference. Again, gonna get the right run but 1300 up the mile for the first time is always a slight query, but happy to spec given how impressed I was with that last start effort.

Race 7 – 4:10PM NEOMETALS HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Beret has gotta be going close here. That fresh run on the wrong part of the track was really big, loved the way he savaged the line when racing tightly with a couple of other runners. He’ll be getting back from 7 here but if CJP can tag a horse the likes of Sir Mambo, he’s gonna get a cart in and possesses the turn of foot to be rocketing past these. $2.80 is far too skinny, happy to play at $3.50+.

Expecting a hugely improved performance from Weaponson back on top of the ground. Just hasn’t been appreciating these soft tracks he’s been dished up at both starts this prep. Gets back onto a dry track, gets a senior in the Pontiff back on which I love, should get a lovely run sitting over the speed.

Race 8 – 4:45PM XXXX KALGOORLIE CUP (2200 METRES)

3. Media Baron – 7. Red Hot Tip – 4. Bella’s Idol – 8. Stafford’s Lad

Media Baron a thing licked last start in the Boulder Cup. Pontiff returning to the saddle is a huge booking. Just gets the perfect run smothered midfield for the last crack at them and after that L200m in the Boulder Cup is going to be awfully hard to beat.

Red Hot Tip

Not losing on RHT. Been set for this and love the prep he’s had to get him peaking with 2 runs at the mile followed by a run at the 2000, peaking at the staying trip 4th up. Maps to find this dream trail in behind the speed, drops 6.5kgs on his last run where he really wasn’t asked for much sitting last off that absolute crawl of a tempo, I thought the way he hit the line there was a great final tune up. Has just got a great platform, won’t know himself with the weight, looks really well-placed to run a massive race at his Grand Final for the prep. The only query for me was how slow they went in that race last start and whether he didn’t get as much out of that run as they’d hoped, but he’s an out and out stayer who’s been outperforming expectations his prep runs so far and finally getting out to the trip will bring out the best in him.

Devine Beast

Devine Beast is flying and finds a race where Parnham can just camp him back off the frantic tempo and let him rip I think. Should never have got as close to Come Magic as he did last start given how little pressure that runner copped up front on a very rail hot day. The extra 100m suits, the race shape looks tailor made, hot speed camped out the back getting the last crack at them, drawn middle of the line.

Dark Mission

Ugliest of watches last start when a moral beaten when not afforded an out when needed. Flying since heading up to Kal and the outside of the track should be playing well by this stage of the day. In a race with speed drawn everywhere, will be rattling late.
