Jack Draper, the British number one, and world number 15, won his second career ATP tournament on Sunday. In the final of the Vienna Open, Draper, the seventh seed and 2024 United States Open semifinalist, defeated two-time grand slam semifinalist Karen Khachanov of Russia, 6-4, 7-5. Khachanov reached the final four of the 2022 United States Open and 2023 Australian Open.
In the final, Draper only had two double faults, while Khachanov had three. Meanwhile, Draper won 80% of his first serve points (compared to 63% for Khachanov). Draper also broke Khachanov four times in eight opportunities.
Draper defeated two notable players during the tournament. In the first round, he beat Kei Nishikori of Japan, the 2014 United States Open finalist, 7-6, 7-5. Then Draper defeated the sixth seed, and 2024 Wimbledon semifinalist, Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.
In the history of the Vienna Open, three British tennis players have won the tournament in the past. In 1999, Greg Rusedski, the 1997 United States Open finalist, defeated Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, the 2006 Australian Open semifinalist, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. In 2000, Great Britain beat Germany again, as Tim Henman, the six-time grand slam semifinalist (1998, 1999, 2001 and 2002 Wimbledon, 2004 French Open and 2004 United States Open), beat Tommy Haas, the four-time grand slam semifinalist (1999, 2002, and 2007 Australian Open, and 2009 Wimbledon), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. In 2014, Andy Murray, the 2012 United States Open champion, and 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon champion, beat David Ferrer of Spain, the 2013 French Open finalist, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. Then in 2016, Murray beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, the 2008 Australian Open finalist, 6-3, 7-6.
This was Draper’s second career ATP title win. He previously beat Matteo Berrettini of Italy, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, in the final of Stuttgart in June, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
