This past Sunday, the Miami Dolphins smoked the New York Jets 24-0. It was simply never even close. The Dolphins dominated the game from start to finish offensively and defensively.
When Miami had the football, Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick looked extremely poised in the pocket. He completed 18 of 27 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns. Yes, Fitzpatrick had two interceptions, but both picks came with Miami in complete control of the game.
The Dolphins also clearly have momentum with a mini two game winning streak, and with a record of three wins and three losses, are in the hunt for a playoff spot in the AFC. They currently are second in the AFC East and only one game back of the division-leading Buffalo Bills.
This makes the decision made by head coach Brian Flores this week an interesting one. On Tuesday according to Cameron Wolfe of ESPN, the Dolphins announced they have made a change moving forward. Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins’ first round pick out of the University of Alabama, will take over from Fitzpatrick starting in week eight when the Dolphins face the Los Angeles Rams.
Miami is currently on a bye week as they do not play week seven. Is this the right time for Flores to make the change? How much will this decision now impact the Dolphins moving forward? Rookie quarterbacks need a learning curve. If Tagovailoa struggles, how long will it take for Flores to make another change?
The Dolphins finally have things going. After years of mediocrity, Miami has the capability of winning the AFC East due to some vulnerability at this time in New England and Buffalo. By changing quarterbacks now, it could interfere with team chemistry the rest of the 2020 NFL regular season.
