The AFL has never been bigger commercially, with record crowds, booming television audiences and the imminent arrival of Tasmania. Yet behind those headline numbers, a growing number of figures inside the game believe Australian football is confronting one of its biggest challenges in decades.
The debate isn’t about whether the AFL is thriving financially. It’s about whether the game’s leadership is doing enough to protect its long-term future as issues surrounding concussion, competitive balance, umpiring, equalisation and governance continue to dominate the headlines.
Former Adelaide captain Rory Sloane and ex-Melbourne skipper Garry Lyon are among those who have questioned whether the AFL has reached a crossroads, arguing the league must confront several major issues rather than simply celebrating record attendances and broadcast revenue.
Perhaps the biggest challenge surrounds player welfare.

A major ABC Four Corners investigation this week revealed that 33 Australian Rules footballers have now been diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), including 19 former professional and semi-professional players. Experts described the figures as “alarming” and urged the AFL to act more aggressively in reducing repetitive head impacts across all levels of the game. The AFL has since confirmed it plans to introduce stricter limits on full-contact training from the 2027 pre-season.
The concussion debate, however, is only one part of the picture.
Questions continue to be raised over the league’s equalisation measures, with critics arguing the fixture, draft concessions and academy systems have created significant advantages for some clubs while leaving others trapped in lengthy rebuilds. Kane Cornes recently labelled the issue a “crisis”, calling for stronger equalisation measures to ensure the competition remains as even as possible.
Off the field, the AFL has also found itself under increased scrutiny.
The league is in the middle of a significant coaching carousel involving clubs such as Essendon and Carlton, while Tasmania continues searching for its inaugural senior coach ahead of its entry into the competition in 2028. At the same time, tribunal decisions, umpiring controversies and ongoing criticism of the Match Review process have fuelled weekly debate among players, coaches and supporters.
Yet despite the criticism, it’s difficult to argue the AFL is genuinely broken.
Crowd figures remain among the highest in the competition’s history, television audiences continue to grow and the league recently secured another lucrative broadcast agreement. Tasmania’s arrival will also expand the national footprint of the game and create fresh opportunities for players and fans alike.
Perhaps “crisis” isn’t the right word.
What the AFL is experiencing feels more like growing pains.
As the competition becomes bigger, wealthier and more scrutinised than ever before, every decision attracts greater attention. Concussion, equalisation, governance and integrity are no longer niche issues—they’re central to the future of the game.
How the AFL responds over the next few years may ultimately determine whether this period is remembered as a crisis or simply a turning point.
