Winx Makes It Four George Ryder Stakes In Rosehill Farewell

March 23, 2019

Champion mare Winx said farewell to Rosehill in fine style by winning the G1 George Ryder Stakes.

The Chris Waller-trained mare made winning look easy once again winning by 3.5L.

The 24x G1 winner was noticeably sweaty in the yard with the hot and humid conditions but a roar from the crowd as she stepped out of the mounting yard had her switched on and ready to go.

With the track being considerably heavy on the inside Bowman was almost arrogant with his tactics when steering the mare to a three-wide position at the 700m mark and then four wide rounding the turn.

In a post-race interview, jockey Hugh Bowman felt Winx lift when she heard the crowd urge her on to victory.

“When the crowd erupted I could feel the energy just increase in her body and she surged to the line”

Trainer Chris Waller was full of praise for his superstar mare stating,

“She’s just a marvelous horse to work with. She’s making people remember a very good sport for the right reasons”

Winx will have her last start in three weeks in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick.
