Lucas Herrington is about to become Australia’s most expensive football transfer ever, eclipsing Harry Souttar’s blockbuster bill, after his current U.S. team Colorado Rapids agreed to a £17 million (A$32.5M) transfer with Hull City.
The moves means the 18-year-old will now be playing in the Premier League this year, after Hull City was promoted from the Championship last season.

The soon-to-be-historic transfer deal still has some i’s and t’s that need to be dotted and crossed, the Athletic has been reporting, and Herrington still has to thrash out personal terms with the English club, too, but everything is largely wrapped up from a formal side of things.
It’s not great shock for anyone who has watched Herrington’s quick career rise, either, or his performances at the 2026 World Cup.
He moved from Brisbane to the Rapids before the 2026 season, and was signed through to 2029 with the U.S. team, but the Major League Soccer competition was clearly beneath his growing level.
Media reports from the U.K. suggested Liverpool and Barcelona were also interested. The Athletic reported in June that Barcelona had seen an opening bid for the international rejected.
Sources said Liverpool had also sent scouts to watch him this season.
The whole thing does shine a disappointing spotlight on the Roar, who held a sell-on fee for Herrington but recently waived the rights to it for $560,000. Should they have not struck that bargain, Brisbane would have walked away with some $4.8 million (AUD), if not more.
